Xiao's POV

That night, Venti didn't return until almost 3am. Did it keep Xiao up? The simple answer: yes. He couldn't sleep, he showered three times, laid in bed until he heard the soft knocking on the front door. Xiao sprang up immediately, tripping and crumpling to the floor as he tripped over the comforter from the bed. He swung open the door to be met with Venti, mostly sober this time, to Xiao's surprise. Venti stared at Xiao with wide eyes.

"Your nose," Venti swiped his finger gently across Xiao's upper lip, showing the taller boy the blood on his fingertip. Venti entered the house and locked the door after he swung it closed, then grabbed a napkin from the kitchen counter. He held the napkin to Xiao's bloody nose, avoiding eye contact. "You're always welcome here, you know," Xiao's stare pierced Venti. "I will be leaving soon but I will always return." Venti finally looked at the boy in front of him. "You can always find me if you try."

"Where are you going?"

"Home, to Liyue."

"What about Aether?" Venti wanted Xiao to stay. Not that he'd ever admit that, because he doesn't really understand it yet. Mondstadt is the City of Freedom, freedom as in you can be who you are, love who you love, and more. But Venti knew there was someone in particular who'd never accept him.

"I won't be gone forever. I should return in a week or two." Xiao looked at Venti, reading the shorter boy like a book.

"I have to go home, but I'll be back in the morning, say 11am? If I'm not.." Venti grabbed a slip of paper and pen from the counter, scribbling something quickly. "If I'm not back by 11am exactly, go here, through the second story window in the back." Xiao nodded, and with that, Venti disappeared into the other room. Moments later, he returned in his normal attire. He offered a sad smile to the taller boy in front of him, knowing that he may never see him again after he walked out the door. "Goodbye, Xiao."

"Goodbye, Venti, see you soon." And Venti left, walking 'home'.

But little did Xiao know, something terrible would be happening just a few houses down.

Venti's POV

Venti walked as slowly as he could. The cobblestone roads of Mondstadt were quiet, the cool breeze causing his braids to sway slightly. He took the ten short steps up to the front door, pushing it open and closed as slowly and quietly as he could. He turned around and sighed, his back against the door. The room was dark except for the dim light of a lamp on table, next to it was a person; about the same height as Venti, maybe a little shorter, with the same bright turquoise eyes. Her hair was long and dark grey, reaching towards her waist. She stared at Venti. "Where the fuck have you been?"

Venti froze at the sound of her venom-laced voice. "M-mom, I-I.. I was with a friend." He breathing quickened, the room starting to twirl as anxiety overwhelmed him.

"A friend, hm? Was it a boy? Where?" His mother stood, making her way to him.

"I-I, mom.. It was no one." When he didn't give her the crystal clear answer that she was looking for, she raised her hand in the air, striking the boy harshly across the face. Venti brought his hand up, laying it over his red skin. It wasn't the first time she'd hit him, but it still shocked him every time she did it.
