Wolf Moon
Hazel Pei only wanted one thing. One simple thing.
She wanted to go to sleep.
After spending the day reorganising her bookshelves and playing catch up on her holiday school work, she was exhausted. Her sophomore year started the next morning, and although she knew school would be a drag no matter what, she wanted to be well rested.
Unfortunately, the universe had other plans for her and would not give her the peace and quiet she needed. In fact, on this night when sleep was exceedingly important, someone was trying to break into her house. Two someones, if she heard correctly.
Her annoyance almost outweighed her fear at the situation. Not just because she wanted to sleep, but because there was nothing of any value in her house, so these intruders were wasting their time and hers. Plus, she had the comfort of knowing her murder would be quickly avenged because she was best friends with the sheriff's son.
It didn't mean she would go down without a fight though.
Sighing heavily, she pulled herself from bed to investigate. If her parents were home, this wouldn't even be her problem. As usual, however, they were away on an extended business trip, and Hazel was home alone. She didn't even know what their business was.
Before going downstairs, she took the time to check her clothes. Black sweatpants and an old gray jumper. Not fantastic, but it was acceptable attire to die in. If the robbers actually were dangerous, and she ended up having to call an ambulance or something, she would much rather not be found in her pajamas.
Upon exiting her room, she turned off her Speak Now CD, and the house was plunged into silence. The voices outside became easier to hear. There were definitely two of them, and they seemed to be arguing.
She crept through the house. Because of its age, she had to be careful to step over the creaky floorboards. There was no point alerting the intruders of her presence when she was so close to the front door, and she hoped she could scare them off if she caught them by surprise. Luckily, it was the only house she had lived in since moving to America, and she knew it like the back of her hand.
A lacrosse stick she had been meaning to give back to Scott was propped up by her door, and she was flooded with gratitude towards her own forgetfulness. If she had given it back when she was supposed to, she would have no weapon. While a lacrosse stick wasn't the most effective weapon, it was better than nothing.
She picked up the lacrosse stick, and pushed open the door at the same time. It was only open enough to poke the stick through, which she did. The stick quickly hit something, alerting her the people trying to break in were closer to her door than she had expected. Before they could react, she jabbed the stick forwards again, hoping they would get the message and leave.
