I was brimming with happiness as I listened to Professor Ryan give my Esper 101 class instruction. We were practicing levitation techniques today and were instructed to partner up. Mary Lu and I automatically floated together. The class was fairly small so we got to all know each other pretty well over the past few months. Mary Lu and I seemed to get along the best. She was soft spoken and a little on the shy side, but very nice and kindhearted nonetheless. The twins, Jamie and Aiden, always magnetized to each other and Mr. Know-It-All Branson went back and forth between groups. Today he decided to team up with the twins leaving Mary Lu and I to ourselves.
"Alright minions, here's what you're gonna do." Professor Ryan began, clasping his hands together, "On the table in front of you are three steel balls. You and your partner are going to concentrate your energy to pick a single ball up and rotate it around you. Notice the circle you're standing in." We all glanced down to the separate chalk circles we had stepped into with a wooden table resting in the center of it. "One of you will start and you will follow the line until you reach the edge of the table. Once you do, your partner will take over in moving the ball around the circle. Each of you should move the ball around half the circle before switching off. Understood?" We all nodded out heads and he turned to Branson's group.
"You three will do the same switching off when the ball reaches your end of the circle. Got it?" They nodded again and Professor Ryan turned back towards us.
"Alright, let's give it a go." I turned to Mary Lu and gave her a warm smile.
"Do you wanna start or me?" I asked. She looked thoughtful for a moment, staring at the slivery spheres.
"You." She finally said. I nodded and focused on the ball closest to me. I effortlessly lifted it into the air and brought it around the circle. When it reached her side of the space, Mary Lu spread her hands out and concentrated all of her attention on the ball. I felt her slip a film of her energy over it and let go. The ball immediately crashed to the ground with a loud crack. She winced and a second later the sound was echoed as Jamie also dropped his ball. Professor Ryan shook his head.
"No, no, no. Remember, levitation is a technique of balance. You must concentrate on the opposing forces acting upon the ball. It's the same as when we used hover techniques to ascend our own bodies into the air. That center of balance is what you must focus on in another object. At the same time when you're handing it off to your partner you must feel the connection of balance made before you let go. Again." I focused on the ball and in an instant it sprung into the air. I held it steady as Mary Lu once again coated its steely surface in her own energy. I felt the connection and slowly let go. The ball wobbled through the air as she tried to bring it around the circle.
"Crap!" I heard Aiden hiss before his ball smacked the ground. The noise caused Mary Lu to lose her concentration and her own ball hurled to the floor.
Professor Ryan sighed before coming over to me. "Alright look. You guys have to concentrate. Mary Lu." He gestured for her to step out of the circle and she quickly obliged. He glanced down at the ball resting on the ground and it snapped into the air.
"Remember to find the center of the object. We coat our own molecular energy around an item to do just this. Once we have, we can spread the opposing forces out which will cause it to hover. To move the object through the air you must apply more pressure to one side or the other of said object and it will obey your will." The ball then floated through the air to my side of the circle. "When you are handing the ball off to your partner, you must wait until they gain complete control over it. You'll feel it when their energy has connected to its center. Your own energy will by pushed out, like opposing magnetic poles, due to the difference in molecular make up. Once this happens you can completely let go and your partner will take over."
