A small talk

By: Galaxy Unheard

..........

To begin with, what is a small talk? In general or if you search it up on google, it will come out as an informal type of discourse that does not cover any functional topics of conversation or any transactions that need to be addressed. In essence, it is polite conversation about unimportant things.

That means it's just a small casual conversation between two or more people with random topics.

I had a small talk with a random person once. Our talk didn't even reach an hour. It was only under thirty minutes or so. Nonetheless, I enjoyed talking to him despite being stranger towards each other.

October 25, 20**.

Class was just dismissed and I already headed out to go home. While walking on the pavement, I felt a few drops of water suddenly pouring from the sky. Just then it started raining. The commuting station was around 800+ meters far from where I was standing and the closest shade to me was a waiting shed across the streets and since I didn't have an umbrella, I ran to the other side and waited for the rain to calm down a bit.

Just then, as I sat on the bench waiting an hour or two, another person came running to the waiting shed, seeking for shelter. He was drenched from the rain and so were the architecting material he had with him. I figured that we were from the same school because of the logo on his uniform.

But despite being a student at the same big university, I paid him no mind for he was none of my business.

He sat on the other bench just beside the three seater bench I was sitting on, and now we are four seats apart from each other.

As I continue to stare into oblivion, I heard him call me.

"Excuse me, miss?" I heard him say

Well, who else would he call, other than me? I was the only one there with him; unless...he can see ghosts. If he was talking for his phone, he wouldn't be saying excuse me miss. And so I looked at his direction asking why he called me.

"Yes?" I asked.

"May I borrow your phone for a bit? I'll just have to call someone from our house to come pick me up. It won't take long, I promise." he said. Since I pity him, I nodded and said okay, before handing him my phone. It seems like his phone is no longer working because of getting drench in the rain.

He stood up and went to the corner of the shed and called someone. Like before, I paid him no mind and continued to stare into empty space waiting for the rain to subside. Then after a few minutes, he called me again and then thanked me before handing me my phone back.

"Thank you." He politely said.

"You're welcome." I said back to him and again, the silence swallowed the both of us.

But it seemed like this guy isn't into peaceful silence so he decided to strike a conversation with me, this time, he was a little casual.

"I'm guessing you're also a fan of anime, based on your wallpaper?" he asked. Then I remembered that my lockscreen was Light Yagami from Death Note.

"Yes, yes I am. And I'm guessing that you are as well?" I replied back while staring at my wallpaper.

"I am. So, do you also read manga?" He asked again and this time I looked at him and he was looking into empty space like how I was a while ago.

"Yes, I do. Since I figured that we both are familiar with this topic, what is your favourite genre?" I asked him, this time he's looking at my direction.

"I like Mystery/Thriller. I also like Shounen jump. But I love sports anime the most. And you?" He said while squeezing water out of his towel.

"I prefer Isekai and historical anime; also, the ones with MMORPG. So you're an architecture student?" I said while offering him a clean handkerchief and he politely accepted it and said thank you.

"Ah, yes. I am. But as you can see, my materials are now drenched. There's even an upcoming exam in three days. I need to find a solution to this. Otherwise, I'll fail." He said while drying himself with the small cloth I offered him.

"Oh, there's this new opened art studio around the block, you might be able to buy new materials there. I heard they sell good quality material and they'll be on sale for this month." I suggested which gave him a delighted expression.

"Really? Then that's great! By the way, what are you doing here alone? You're going home on your own? It's no longer safe here at this hour, especially now that it's the cold season. Nights are longer than days." He asked me and I just shrugged my shoulders and returned my gaze to the open space.

"It's not really that hard to commute alone as long as I know what I'm doing. And usually there are tricycles, jeeps, or even taxis around here. But I guess they're not around because of the rain. I just happened to be stranded here because it has been raining for an hour or two." I answered him.

"I see. So I guess we'll be waiting longer here then. It appears that the rain isn't going to stop for a while. Don't you have anyone to call to pick you up?" He then again asked.

"No. My father is a doctor so he's probably still working, while my mother is in another city. I also have no siblings and most of my relatives are out of town. So I'm pretty much on my own for now. But I can still manage since it's always been this way." I said with no worry and looked at him again. "How about you, I guess that you borrowed my phone a while ago to call someone to pick you up?" I asked him and he smiled at me then nodded.

"I called my older brother to pick me up. Since I don't have my license yet, he's driving our father's car. Ha! I swear, once our exam finishes, I'll go get my driver's test so that next time, I won't be going home drenched in rain." He said convincing himself, declaring that he'll get his license soon.

I, on the other hand, just looked at him. It seemed like he finally realised that he looked weird after standing up at bawling his fist in the air while making that declaration. So then he sat down again and looked at me.

"Uhm... so, would you like us to drop you off to the jeep station once my brother comes?" he offered, but I just politely refused him and smiled.

Just then, the rain subsided and afterwards it was only drizzling. Along with that is a car from a distance was nearing the waiting shed, and finally it pulled over in front of us.

A man in casual clothes got out of the driver's side with an umbrella came walking to our direction.

"Let's go, honey. Mom just got home. You wouldn't wan to keep her waiting back home now, don't you?" My dad asked as he picked up my bag and led me to the passenger's seat.

Before the car could pull away, I lowered the car window and waved goodbye to the guy I just had a small talk with, and he waved back.

"I see that our little princess made a friend today! Was he kind to you, honey?" my father asked.

"Yes, father."

And that was the twelve year old me having a small talk with a guy I just randomly came across with on a rainy day.

And now, here I am again facing him with an appointment regarding the new house I'll be moving in with my husband.

"We meet again, ma'am." He greeted me and I politely smiled at him

"Yes, Architect." I greeted back.
