"Did you just wipe that counter twice?" Rey asked, arms folded as he leaned against the service bar.

"I saw her do it three times," Alina chimed in from behind the pastry case, grinning. "And the last time, it was already spotless."

Avantika didn't look up. "The lighting was weird. It looked smudged."

"Or maybe you're nervous," Sara added, barely looking up from the till as she typed.

Avantika's fingers paused for a split second before she went back to aligning the coasters. She didn't want to look up. Especially not at Sara — not after the look she'd caught on her face last night when she'd seen them.

She was still hoping they'd avoid that conversation. But Sara wasn't one to let things go.

And this? This might just be the crack she needed.

"No witty reply?" Rey's eyebrows shot up. "That means you're definitely nervous."

"Not to forget you're dressed up too," Mira added, walking past with two cappuccinos on a tray. "Took me three seconds to notice."

"No, I am not!" Avantika exclaimed. "I'm dressed like I always am."

"Burgundy instead of nude was the biggest giveaway," Tisha said without missing a beat, as she breezed by with a roll of parchment paper, leaving behind a room full of knowing stares and one very red Avantika.

"I like this shade," she muttered, not convincing a single soul.

"And tell me again why you're off at 3 today?" Sara asked, arms folded, her voice casual but her eyes far too knowing.

Avantika shot her a pleading look — Don't. Please don't.

Sara, however, met it with the classic best friend counter: the tell-me-everything-right-now stare.

They stood like that for a second — a silent standoff only years of friendship could hold — until Rey leaned over and whispered into his girlfriend's ear, "These two definitely know something we don't, right?"

"Absolutely yes," Alina grinned. "But we'll find out soon enough."

With that, the couple disappeared into the kitchen, smirking like they'd been handed the first half of a mystery novel.

Left behind, Avantika turned to Sara with a sigh. "You're not going to let this go, are you?"

Sara grinned. "Not even a little."

With another sigh — more resigned than annoyed — Avantika walked over to stand beside her.

"You're meeting him, aren't you?" Sara asked, a knowing smile tugging at her lips.

"Is it that obvious?" Avantika asked, unable to hide her own smile.

"That—" Sara said, pointing at her face, "—and something else too."
