"She's beautiful, Harry."
Remus cradled baby Lily in his arms, rocking her gently with Draco fussing over her with a bib.
The wooden floorboards on the floor whispered as Harry paced slowly and steadily in the nursery, fingers brushing the walls lightly, his trainer's soles brushing the polished wood. They didn't so much as squeak, as Harry nailed them to the floor himself.
Sunlight poured through the enormous window ledge that Harry and Draco recreated from their childhood. Now well in their twenties and responsible parents of a baby girl, they still enjoyed lazy afternoons or starlit nights cuddling on the ledge, holding hands, with Lily sleeping soundly in the crib.
The room was another expansion project. Harry and Draco went to the Household Registration Office to get legally married the day they got engaged but held off the ceremony until Draco got his Master's and Harry got the gist of his job. After their simple and elegant (if you leave out the part where Sirius drunkenly insisted on belting all the lyrics to Lay All Your Love On Me and got halfway through the song before Remus successfully pried him off the stage) wedding and crazy honeymoon, they suddenly had this totally bizarre idea to adopt a baby.
The nursery took two years of Harry and Draco's after-work time to complete. Then it took about three seconds to take down a whole wall of their cottage in order to connect the nursery to it.
After that came the paperwork. They were on the waiting list for a whole year before any trace of news, anxiously waiting by the phone as the days passed.
But none of them regretted the labor one bit. A phone call was all it took for two grown men to be fully weeping and hugging each other. Now with Lily-bud safe with them, cooing softly and stretching her chubby little fingers, it was all worth it.
"She's waking up."
Harry looked down tenderly, smiling at the world's most beautiful half-open brown eyes. She began to fuss lightly, which went up two octaves and transformed into full-on screaming in a matter of seconds.
"She misses her daddies," Sirius announced, smiling. "Man, I remember when I used to babysit you, Harry. You were a massive screamer."
"I think 'babysitting' might be stretching it a bit, Padfoot," Remus said, handing over Lily back to Harry and Draco. "He was a mess, he fainted once changing your diaper," he whispered.
Harry and Draco tried to keep a straight face at the scandalous expression on Sirius' face.
"There, there, shh shh shh..."
The couple bounced their daughter lightly and gently rubbed her back, offering any comforting movements to calm down their little infant.
The screaming toned down a little, reduced to little bursts of quiet weeping and gurgling. Harry and Draco were still stroking her hair.
"That's right baby girl, shh shh shh... Put it all on us."
