You follow Meg into the room she shares with her mother, slightly worried about the conversation she wants to have with you about Ransom. If it's another ''he's bad for you, you should stay away from him'' talk, you'd rather freeze to death outside without a pair of her socks than listen to what she has to say.

Once you're both in her room, she closes the door and turns to face you.

''Do you like Ransom?''

Oh. So you're getting straight into it.

''Of course I do.''

''I mean like him like him.''

You frown. ''Why do you want to know? If you're about to insult him, I really don't want to hear it.''

She shakes her head. ''It's not like that.'' She sits on her bed. ''Yes, he's annoying and obnoxious. He's an asshole even, most of the time but I know that deep down, he's not a bad person.''

You look at her, showing her that you're listening.

''Ransom has never brought a girl over. He always comes alone and he's usually drunk out of his mind by the time dinner ends. Then, tonight he brings you with him and he barely drinks anything. He's even smiling and laughing, I can't remember the last time I saw him do either of these things genuinely, without being sarcastic or arrogant.''

She looks up at you.

''All I'm saying is that if you're here for his money or anything else that has nothing to do with him, as a human being, please leave him. He's absolutely crazy about you and he shouldn't get hurt the first time he opens himself up to someone.''

You look at her, shocked. Normally you would feel insulted that she'd even think that you are here with him for shallow reasons but the look and sincerity in her eyes show that she's just trying to protect him because no one else will.

''I don't want his money. I make my own and I might not be rich but it's enough to live comfortably. I think he's a great man and he has a beautiful heart, and those are the only reasons why I'm here. So, to answer your first question; yes I do like him like him. And it scares the crap out of me because I literally met him a week ago.''

You laugh nervously.

Meg smiles and stands back up. ''You shouldn't be scared. I get why you are, but you don't have to be. Trust me. If you went downstairs right now and asked him the moon, he'd kill himself trying to give it to you. He has that look in his eyes.''

She opens a drawer and takes out a pair of socks. ''Don't stress with time. Time doesn't mean anything for those kinds of things. Some people wait years before allowing themselves to fall for someone and sometimes it works out but other times it doesn't. Just trust your gut.''

She hands you the socks and you take them.

''You're oddly wise for someone your age, you know.'' You laugh softly.

''Thank you.'' She grins. ''Do you want the Uggs?''

''I don't even know what they are.''

She rolls her eyes playfully and goes to her closet. She comes back with a pair of brown-beige booties with some kind of fur inside.

''They're basically high fashion slippers that you can wear outside.'' She shrugs.

''You don't mind if I borrow them?''

''Of course not.''

You smile and take them. ''Thank you, Meg. For everything.''

''You're welcome, angel.'' She winks at you and opens the door.
