Ch 2: Going Through The Motions

Math isn't too hard. I consider myself to be decently smart. We're doing algebra. As I have seen, there seem to be three very distinct groups of students.

One is the nerds and geeks, pushing their thick-framed glasses up, taking notes like it's going out of style. Another group; the popular ones, are all on their phones, barely paying attention as they find out who's dating who, or where the next party is.

Then there are the punks, who could give two shits about what their math grade is. All they do is listen to music; having the occasional 'sword fight', using their pencils as swords. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw the last group serving me a Big Mac, asking me if I want fries with my meal.

I silently take notes in the back of the room, the other kids observing me like a lab rat. They're probably wondering what kind of guy I was; if I would be 'cool', or a loser. Frankly, I couldn't care less.

The class soon ends, and I am just about to leave the room, when in stopped by a female student. She was short, with long, brown hair.

"Hey, Luke! Can I call you that?" She said, in a very cheerful and happy tone. Too happy for me.

"Uhm...I-I guess? What do you need?" I ask, voice low as I shift the strap of my bag some. She smiles brightly, happiness seeming to radiate off of her. I was afraid she was going to explode.

"Well, I'm going to be showing you to you classes, today! We have the same schedule." She exclaimed, looking as happy as could be.

"O-Okay...." I say nervously, not really sure how to respond. She giggles some, before walking off.

"Follow me, Luke! And by the way, the name is Layla." She says with a big smile. I walk slowly behind her, as she stops a few times, chatting with her friends. I stay a small distance behind her, so I wouldn't become the object to attention. Not like I would, anyways.

We soon make our way to the next class, which is world history. Nothing interesting happens for a while, until I reach lunchtime. If you have ever seen what a zoo looks like, then you basically have our cafeteria. The odor makes me want to retch. I can see at least three girls with their boobs popping out of their shirts. Ew. Once again, there's that couple, who I'm pretty sure are getting hydrated off of each other's saliva.

I slowly get in line, glad that Layla wasn't on my back. All of the food looks like it came out of a machine, but I decided that chicken nuggets looked okay. I get some on my tray, along with a milk and orange juice. The lunch lady soon checks me out, and I walk into the cafeteria.

The laughter and chit-chat of the other students is almost deafening. I look for a place to sit. Soon, I'm able to find a secluded spot, near the back of the cafeteria. I start to walk over there, until a jock stalks close to me. I shudder as his shadow cloaked me, trying to pretend he wasn't there.

His giant hand soon crashed onto my tray, sending the tray, and its contents, onto the dirty cafeteria floor. I watch as the prick runs back to his group, the whole lot of them cackling like a pack of hyenas. I bend down to pick up the mess they had made. I'm picking up chicken nugget crumbs off of the ground, when I feel another shadow over me. I expect the worse when I turn around. However, I am greeted with a friendly smile.

"Hey there...you need a hand?" offers the mystery boy. He looked like a popular boy, by the clothes he adorned, and all the people looking at him, confused.

"Uhm...y-yes please." I manage to sputter out. The boy smiles, as he gets on his hands and knees, starting to help me pick up the mess of my lunch. Once we are finished, and the food is thrown away, I smile sheepishly at him, keeping my eyes low

"T-Thank you..." I say. I am about to bolt away from him, before he calls out.

"Hey, bud! You need a place to sit? I think we have room for ya!" He says, a warm friendliness apparent on his voice. I contemplate over this. Do I want to? I thought I was supposed to be alone; to have no friends! I didn't want more heartbreak in my life. But it was something about him....maybe it was his emerald green eyes? Or his brown hair, with a small part covering his eye. Maybe it was his friendly, warm voice, or even his half smile. I don't know what possessed me, I soon smile a little more.

"I-I would love to..." I say with a quiet voice. The voice inside of my head screams for me to walk away.

'We don't wanna be hurt again, do we?!', it says, shouting in my head, wondering what the hell I was doing. Nonetheless, we sit down at his table, and I quietly say hello to the other kids. Soon, the boy who helped me spins on his chair, looking at me.

"Well, my name is Cameron, but you can call me Cam! What's yours?" he asks with an inquisitive tone. I take a second to build my courage up.

"M-My name is Lucas..." I say, giving a small stutter. He pats me on the shoulder.

"Nice to meet you, Luke..."

Y'know....maybe I can make an exception to my rule. One friend won't hurt. Besides....he is kinda cute.
