day 1
"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people."
One of the blockiest books in the Grace Field library. Even now, Ray still couldn't understand half of it, but he could feel how important it was in his hands.
Mom had first read some passages from the bible when they were little, around their first time celebrating Christmas. It had been at the request to know more about Christmas and, especially, the concept of angels.
Naturally, Ray met everything new in his life with caution and skepticism. "So, do all of the angels come from heaven?" Was his five year old self's question.
"That's right," Isabella had said, then patted the head of the child closest to her, which was obviously not Ray. "And all of you kids have your own guardian angel watching over you, who protects you and guides you down the right path."
But not a single one of them has done their jobs, Ray had thought bitterly, amongst the others who were contrastingly mesmerized.
Though since he'd grown, maybe Ray's outlook had changed.
Thirteen now, and he was swerving on his heels, darting across the leaf covered forest floor as a wild demon bit ever so close to his shoulders. There was a minor screw-up while foraging and he'd attracted the beast's attention.
Due to the leaves, he didn't see a protruding vein of tree bark on the ground, and his foot caught underneath it. He was seconds away from falling and being caught in a demon's jaws.
Then, a strong hand tugged on his jacket, and he was yanked out of harm's way instantly. It was Emma, hiding in a large tree hollow nearby.
They both went silent and hid in the dark of the hollow, until the confused creature gave up on the search and stalked away. The two collapsed and sighed in relief.
"Be more careful next time!" Emma cried. "You really scared me there, Ray! It's not like you to do that!"
She'd just saved him, just like she did with the match, and the escape, and the running away from demons, and the will to live at all. She'd just saved him when he was about to die again, almost like a...
"Ah-" Ray heaved for a breath. Emma was in front of him, the closest to the light, and it glinted through her similarly colored hair.
With that, it made her hair look so bright. So much that the ends appeared almost angel wing white, impossibly bright and glowing, and her eyes caught all the vividness of the sun.
"...Sorry," he breathed, in amazement.
"Hey, why are you smiling." Emma pouted. "I hope you're not happy about worrying me."
"It's not that, idiot," he said absently, still staring at her. "I just..."
She blinked. "Just what?"
Her hair looked like it could fade into snow, it was so bright. She was so bright.
Ray didn't really think about it or register that he was moving. One moment he was standing there, the next he was kissing her softly.
The unearthly shock on her face when he pulled away made him grin, and he patted her on the bright head. "I just wanted to say thank you, Emma."
When he turned away to start walking again, he could hear Emma struggling to compute all that behind him, and his face finally started heating up.
"Ray- wh- what did you- why did you- you just- Ray? What? Hey, get back here, what are you thinking about right now? Ray??"
"Well, I was saying thank you for saving me."
"But- but you- that was a thank you?"
"Yeah. Because I like you."
"I- what?"
"I just thought I'd say that now."
"I- you-"
'It was because you looked like my savior, and everything most dear to me,' Ray would have said, but he decided that at that moment, it just wasn't time yet.
"Well-!" Emma caught him by the sleeve again, and when he turned around, her face and hair was still just as bright as the sun or an angel's quills, or both. "I like you too," she blurted out, cheeks flushed.
If there were any guardian angels, Ray's was a human.
