CHAPTER TWO

the ship with black sails

𝓣he transformation back to legs wasn't the easiest Alice had ever had, but she managed to keep herself dry long enough to get her tail swapped for her legs. She hid herself well enough that no one saw it happen, and when the coast was clear enough, she made a quick getaway to head back to the Governor's house. The once clear sky had now become populated by many dark clouds, the wind howling through the gaps of the houses in the port as it had become a lot more prominent than it was before. The appearance of the dark clouds made Alice walk that bit faster as she didn't want to be caught up in any rain when there was no unpopulated place she could hide into if the rain hit her skin. The way back took some time, with every minute that went by feeling like an eternity. But Alice was able to get to the house without an interruption from the skies.

She sneaked her way inside, and at the sight of an empty foyer, she headed up the stairs and acted like she had always been there. She began to tidy her sleeves, only to bump into another one of Elizabeth's maids when she reached the top.

"Oh, there you are." The maid greeted. Alice almost froze at the sudden appearance of someone else but put on a small smile to seem like everything was normal.

"Hi Hannah." Alice greeted back.

"Thought you'd be back earlier than this. We were starting to worry you got lost again."

"No, I just got way-laid. A kid asked for help and I obliged." Alice lied with the most believable story she could think of. After the life changing events of last year, lying was something she had to get used to doing if she wanted her secret to be safe. She didn't like to lie to people she had known for years, especially when she had to lie to Elizabeth and Will. But it had to be done for her own safety.

"Oh. Was he lost?" Hannah seemed to believe the whole lie.

"A little. Apparently he saw a frog and followed it for some time before he realised he wasn't sure where he was anymore."

"Aw, poor thing."

"I know. But he's home now so it's all alright."

"Well, that's good. Good on you for doing that." Hannah smiled lightly which Alice answered with a slight nod. "But hey, you heard about what happened with the pirate though?" She questioned with a serious tone.

"I did." Alice nodded. "Sounds scary."

"I know. Poor Miss Swann, being threatened like that. She's not showing it but I'm sure she's a bit shaken up. I would be if it were me."

"Yeah, I think I would be too. Is it alright if I go see to her?" Alice pointed the way of Elizabeth's room.

"Sure. She's just drying herself off. But I would be careful with mentioning it all. It might still be quite hard for her." Hannah warned.

"Of course." Alice replied then brushed past the maid to get to Elizabeth's room.

She knocked on the door and when she heard a muffled 'yes', she turned the handle and slowly pushed the door open. She soon noticed Elizabeth sat on the end of her bed, now in a dry nightie and trying her best to dry her hair with a towel.

"Hey." Alice greeted her with a small smile. "Is it alright to come in? I can leave you for a bit longer I-"

"No, you're fine. You can come in." Elizabeth reassured softly, allowing Alice to fully come into the room before she shut the door behind her. "I'm sure you've heard."
