"Goddamit, when does it end?", with a sigh, Chris passed the phone to you and searched in his pockets for another cigarette.
You allowed it, he had just learned that his friend, Ethan Winters, was presumed dead and the girl, Rose, was gone too.
He really needed that cig.
Ignoring the smoke that danced around your head and gave you a scratchy feeling in your lungs, you begin to wipe your finger across the display.
The photos were nothing you hadn't seen before, but for some reason some things struck you as odd. There was a picture of Ethan, lying on his back in the grass.
Something black covered his clothes, like clotted blood.
"Hm?", you tilted your head and tried to remember something.
Somewhere you had seen this before. But you couldn't put your finger on it.
Next to you, Chris sighed as thick smoke poured from his mouth.
You glanced at him out of the corner of your eye. He noticed and tried to smile, but you could see he was having a hard time.
"We can do this, Redfield.", you put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed gently.
But all of a sudden his face changed. A growl left his lips before he opened the drive and got out in a swift movement.
Confused, you frowned and jumped out of the car, but before you could say anything, the sound of a helicopter rang out. You looked up at the sky, surprised that he had managed to organize not only a team but also a helicopter.
But when the logo on the side flashed in the dull moonlight, your anticipation quickly faded.
"What is BSAA doing here?", you asked.
He looked at you briefly, shrugged his shoulders and started moving. The way he reacted all of a sudden was strange.
Why was he so angry now?
"Hey, Redfield.", you jumped to his side, the snow crunching under your boots.
He didn't look at you. Instead, he grabbed his ear to communicate with the team.
"So, BSAA is already here.", he informed the rest of the unit.
"Mission adjustment?", someone asked.
"No, it doesn't change anything. Terminate Miranda and save Rose.", now he looked at you briefly. "This is the mission and failure is not an option."
As if his words had magical powers, figures suddenly appeared out of the darkness. At first you thought they were enemies, but when they took human form, you lowered the gun again.
"Redfield.", this time he responded to your voice.
But again he said nothing. Wordlessly, he looked at you, giving you the silent command to speak.
Your eyes jumped from one soldier to another. Then you sighed.
"Forget it.", you grinned as if nothing was wrong. "Let's talk about it later."
His eyes lowered for a moment, he seemed to be thinking, but he just nodded and gave the order to move out.
A snowy forest opened up in front of you. Everything was covered in ice and snow, white as far as the eye could see.
A trembling breath left your lips. Compared to Chris, you wore a thin jacket under your gear that held back the icy wind. He, on the other hand, was wearing only a black turtleneck.
The fabric was so tight against his skin that you could see every muscle as he moved and tensed whenever he made a move.
For a moment, your eyes stayed glued to his huge biceps. He had never looked so ripped and now that he was older he had to look better than he had in the twenty years before.
"Damn.", you cursed softly and lowered your eyes to his back.
His back looked broader, too, and his shoulders in particular had gained mass.
He moved with power, but not clunkily. Every movement was smooth and clean. Like a cat.
Why did your body have to respond to that at that very moment he looked irresistible?
Unconsciously your tongue licked over dry lips, there was still a hint of his taste, smoke and whiskey. Suddenly you caught yourself wanting him to kiss you again. You wanted to taste the flavor again.
With a confused look on your face, you quickly shook your head to get rid of the thoughts and loved down next to Chris and a man squatting on the edge of a cliff.
"Alpha, you have to see this.", he handed Chris his rifle with the scope.
In the distance you could see two helicopters with the naked eye. One of them was hovering dangerously close over a small village. A huge tree had spread out and began to beat at the more troublesome thing with its long gnarled branches.
It caught the low-flying helicopter and hurled it so far away that it crashed in the forest at the other end of the village.
"Holy shit.", you laughed, even though your heart was beating like crazy. "This looks brutal."
Chris's eyes jumped to you and back to the village again.
"It's probably controlled by Miranda. As protection for her castle and the lords.", he said and handed the rifle back, only to grab his own. "I'll go in. You all stay put."
"Rodger that.", the man next to him said.
Without another word, Chris pushed past you and disappeared between rocks and snow.
You followed him, jumping down a small rock that revealed a path underneath.
He didn't notice you at first. That meant your steps were still as silent as they were back then. But as a strange feeling took hold of him he threw a checking gaze over his shoulder.
"(Y/N)?", he genuinely seemed surprised to see you. "What are you doing here? I told you to stay put."
He frowned, visibly displeased.
But you only shrugged and gifted him a broad grin.
"Can't let you go on your own, Redfield.", you said and gave him a gentle bump with your shoulder. "That's not what I'm here for."
"You're here to make sure the mission goes according to plan."
"Yes and no."
"What does that mean? You can't chicken out now."
You sighed, rolling your eyes.
"Relax. I'm not planning on doing that."
"Then why-?"
"Because you need me, Redfield. I'll be right behind you. Now stop wasting time, it's useless to argue. I'll follow you, no matter what. Remember my promise. We will make it out of here."
His lips twitched, a hint of bitterness shimmered in his eyes.
"Right.", he mumbled, moving on. "The stupid promise..."
