"Reloading now. Just a minute!", assured Lobo. "I'll send another."

Chris coughed. His chest felt tight and it was hard to breath. He thought that the air was burning him from the inside and yet he felt like suffocating at the same time.

"I don't know how long I can still make it...", he notified his team and jumped aside to dodge another attack.

"We're almost there.", Lobo sounded like he was about to solve all mysteries of life. "One second."

Chris jumped to the side again, chased across the cave and sought cover behind a rock.

"Lobo, I'm serious!", he shouted, while stones rained down on him.

"I'm on it! Just one more... fucking second!"

Chris threw another grenade. To his misfortune, it bounced off the metal skin of the colossus and gut stuck in the ground. As it exploded, half of the wall collapsed.

Dust filled the room, making it impossible to see or breathe.

"Boss, I need a point to aim for!", Lobo's voice was shaking.

Coughing, Chris raised the flashlight again and pointed it into the could, hoping he would find something with it.

"Can you see it?", he asked.

"Y-yes... holy shit, this must be a golden shot! Now or never, boss!"

"I'd prefer now than never. Shot!"

As the last ray of bombs sailed down the cave, Chris couldn't believe his luck.

The explosives hit the giant in the neck, directly between two parts of well protected limbs. For a second, it stopped in its rage and looked at the metal heads that had just pierced its flesh.

Then, everything went white before his eyes. A bright, unnatural light filled the cave. Heat but his skin and he had to squeeze his eyes shut to resist the immense amount of pressure. Air chased through his hair and made the short strands dance.

For a moment, the world was shaking. Then, silence returned as if nothing had ever happened.

"Boss?", carefully, Lobo stuck his head through the opening and glanced into the dark.

Chris sighed.

"I'm fine.", he said, getting back on his feet.

He was still a bit weak, shaking even. Sweat dripped down his forehead.

God, he felt old. Old and exhausted.

"No, you're not.", Tundra said in a dry manner. "I can tell by your breathing that you're done. You should come back up."

Chris hissed. Oh, how he hated her tone. Sure, she was right, but the way she said it sounded like a challenge to him. He felt mocked, both as a man and a soldier.

"I'll be fine. I'll keep moving. The rest of you, stay above ground.", he ordered and set one foot through the hole that his grenade had ripped into the cave wall.

"Are- Are you sure?", Lobo asked.

"Yes. Very. Now put your worries aside and let me find that Megamycete. I'll ring you up when I'm done with that part, so we can find (Y/N)."

"Ugh.", Tundra's disgust was clearly audible. "Yeah, what else?"

"Not again, Tundra.", Umber eyes complained. "We should really get through with this job. I'm fed up with your jealousy. I just want to go home."

"Tzk. Yeah. Got it."

Something was off.

He couldn't say what it was, but there was a feeling, deep inside of him. It was rare that his guts betrayed him.

Everything was so calm, so silent and lifeless. The tunnel, through which he was walking, had no holes, no escapes nor paths that lead somewhere else. It seemed to be a special one, specifically made to lead to a place that was important.

And yet.

Be couldn't shake this feeling off that made him feel restless. The setting seemed a bit too quite for his liking. After all those years as a soldier, he knew that silence was never a good thing.

Slowly, the dark faded and dim light spread across the tunnel. An exit was laying ahead. It lead into an underground passage, large enough to let multiple lycans pass a canyon at the same time.

From a distance, Chris was able to spot something huge. It was glowing and throbbing, almost like a heart. Strange structures kept it secured between the two cave walls, giving it enough space to dangle in the air.

Whenever it throbbed, the entire thing moved. The smell of raw flesh was in the air.

"I found it. It's the Megamycete.", Chris mumbled, stopping for a moment. "Alpha to squad. I've located the Megamycete."

"So now we can end this mess after all.", said Lobo in a pleased manner.

"About damn time.", Chris' eyes checked the surroundings, before grabbing his supplies and taping a load of explosives onto a knife. "N2 explosives armed."

With one swift throw, he buried the knife deep inside the flesh of the thing. A red light lit up. The explosives began to make small sounds, notifying him that they were working.

"There's enough to blow the whole village sky high.", Chris informed his team.

"Let's get out of here and blow the damn place.", Umber eyes demanded.

Chris lips twitched.

"No! Not before I found (Y/N).", he insisted.

"And what about Miranda?", Tundra asked in a mocking voice. "And your friend? What was his name? Ethan? Oh, and his mutant baby Rose. She was once important as well."

Chris sighed, rolling his eyes.

"Don't be a smart ass, Tundra. I know what I have to do. And I will do it.", he hesitated, biting his lips. "But I won't leave (Y/N) behind. Not again. Never again."

"Ugh, you sound so soft, captain. Almost disgusting how you bend and break your spine for this little one. Seriously, all we got from your best soldier is nothing but trouble. We all could be home now, the village in ruins. But what's instead? Your little friend needs to be rescued.", she suddenly stopped in her monologue, falling silent for a moment. "Speaking of the devil. Hey, captain. The signal is moving again. Seems like your friend is coming to you. Or at least closer."

Chris' eyes widened.

"Where?", he asked, already looking around.

He didn't expect to see anything, obviously. But he couldn't help but feel excited all of a sudden.

"A few feet away from your location. The signal is moving constantly, but it changes between two or three fixed locations. Maybe the lycans are trying to mess with us."

"I'll check it out."

"But we don't even know if your best soldier is still alive. Maybe it's just the tracing device-!"

"Tundra.", his voice was as cold as ice. "I won't repeat myself. Do me a favour and keep your mouth shut from now on. Otherwise, I might forget myself."
