✦

you were seven when your half-brother was sent off as your nation's 'last hope' to infiltrate monstadt.

perhaps it was the child in you hoping that when your father returned, your brother would still be there, but as the days went by, you began to realise that he really wasn't coming back.

despite the slight age difference, you and your brother had always gotten along. when you were together, it was like you could forget all about the responsibilities that would come to rest on your shoulders.

of course, despite your similarities, there was still a stark difference between your positions.

and your father, despite 'loving' you both dearly, had never really approved of your friendship.

after all, for two children who bore the mark, as it was called, khaenri'ah was full of jealous citizens, some of whom would go to any lengths, it if slowed their own transformation.

your brother, the only other person to bear the mark, as you did, was the only person who could understand your feelings about it, for he was again the only one to have the same feelings.

after his departure, you couldn't help but note that the house did seem emptier.

it went from being your home to just... your place of residence.

it was simply where you lived with your father, and all his numerous guards and such.

when a year had passed, you lit a candle and set it on your windowsill.

"for you, brother. happy birthday."

soon it became your tradition, to light a candle every year for his birthday.

you had asked him not to forget you, so you decided every year not to forget him.

growing up in khaenri'ah was, perhaps once would say, uneventful.

with your father preoccupied with ruling over the dust and ash that was your nation, and your only other relative far away, you learnt to enjoy your own company.

picking up hobbies such as fighting and painting became the only way your time was spent away from the shallow glimmer of royalty.

the dead landscape didn't exactly provide any artistic inspiration, but it became a quiet place away from the house, where nobody bothered you.

eight years on from when your brother had departed, you were walking through a part of the landscape that may have once been a forest.

wandering through the rocks and black sand, you sighed and looked up to the sky.

suddenly though, you stopped in your tracks.

falling from the sky was... a girl?

your body moved before your brain could think, and you found yourself rushing forward, as the girl continued to tumble from the sky.

from what you could see, she had blonde hair and was dressed in a white dress.

you watched as the girl's falling figure got closer and closer until you realised.

wait i'm going to need to catch her wait-

you ran forward again with your arms outstretched and breathed a sigh of relief when the girl landed safely in your arms.

setting her carefully on the ground, you began to ponder the situation.

it wasn't every day that attractiv-

ehem.

it wasn't every day that people fell out of the sky, especially into khaenri'ah, which was practically dead.

you were shaken out of your thoughts from the sound of a voice.

you looked to where the girl was now sitting up.

her eyes, you noticed, were golden. like the sun.

in fact, to you, this girl seemed like the sun.

shining. bright. like light.

???

"who are you?"
