Fandom: The Hobbit

Pairing: The Company x Reader (platonic)

Words: 2897

Summary: You found an old little workshop in one of the abandoned halls in Erebor. It has been almost 2 years since The Battle and renovations were well underway. In the little workshop, you found tools from your world, for example, screwdrivers, hammers, spanners etc. You spend for what felt like hours inside the workshop repairing a little radio barely bigger than your hand. And when you finally fixed it, you went to show The Company only to find something is very wrong.

A/N: This is my first 'x Reader' story so I would appreciate it if you could point out any mistakes that I may have made because this isn't edited. This is an Everyone lives/Nobody dies (kind of) au because I said so. This took about a little over an hour to write, and I must say, I'm quite proud of how it turned out.

Your day couldn't have been any better.

Fíli and Kíli were their usual mischievous selves, though you noticed that they were moving a lot more slowly than they usually did. Like they were getting tired more easily and didn't have enough energy to fully commit to their enthusiasm. And if you looked closely, they seemed to look older

Ori was practically talking your ear off as you two sat in the library. Bofur was cracking joke after joke, making you wheeze as you clutched your sides. Nori had shown you how to pick the lock to Dwalin's office in the Guard Room, but you two had to make a hasty escape when Dwalin threw his door open to see the two of you crouched in front of the lock, exasperation was written clearly on his face as he made a half-assed attempt to catch you. You helped Dori pick out some fabrics for a new project he had taken up and you couldn't help but wonder what it was, you tried to ask him, but when it came to his projects, Dori could be as tight-lipped as a child refusing to eat their veggies.

You didn't see much of Balin after breakfast, but after a quick assurance from Dori that he was probably busy today, even though you had stopped by his office twice that morning. There wasn't that much paperwork on his desk, the ink pots were still in the top drawer and the quills are still placed in the little holder that Bifur had made for the older Dwarf.

You couldn't help but think Balin was avoiding you, that what you had told him this morning had made it that he didn't want to see you. And if you were being honest with yourself, that hurt a lot.

As the day dragged on, you started to see less and less of the Company. You stopped by their places of work with a neatly wrapped lunch consisting of freshly baked bread slathered with creamy butter, and some dried meat you had made from the deer you and Kíli had killed not that long ago. But you didn't find anyone. You were starting to wonder if Balin had told them about your dream. But he wouldn't go behind your back like that, right? Right?

Your mood worsened when you walked into the library and didn't see anyone, you were about to leave when you heard faint scuffing behind the second row of bookcases to your left.

Readjusting your grip on the lunch and squared your shoulders. Striding with purpose, you sauntered your way past the shelves and around the corner. You couldn't help but smile at what you saw.

There in front of you was Ori, standing on a rickety stool reaching for a book on one of the higher shelves. The stool wobbled beneath the foot he was standing on, the other was stretched out behind him successfully making him look like the world's most adorable ballerina.

You laughed softly as he finally managed to grasp hold of the book and jump off the stool where he lost his balance and fell on his butt with a yelp.

The look on his face only made you laugh harder as he stood up and rubbed his sore rump.
