Chapter 20 – Introducing First Dates: Part II

“Do you know?” Jesse asks me as he keeps his eyes on the road. The road was empty since it was pretty late. The moon and the stars shone brightly in the sky as we headed to this ‘secret location.’

“No I don’t. Why?” From the corner of my eye, I saw Jesse roll his eyes.

“The only reason I didn’t tie a handkerchief around your eyes is so that you can visit this special place. It’s really beautiful you know.” He says. Well, I hope so.

“Yeah well, thanks for that. I will surely visit this place. Everyday even.” I say, smiling widely at him. A silence passed us. It wasn’t a bad or awkward kind of silence though, it was… comfortable and nice. Not paying it anymore mind, I just stared at the passing scenery in front of me.

“When we get there…” He suddenly starts. “Don’t get all mushy with me okay?” He says, nearly whispering now. It might have been dark now, but the light blush on his face is still pretty obvious since he’s trying so very hard to hide it and miserably failing at it.

“When do I ever get mushy?”

“All the time.” He says. “You are extremely thoughtful and kind to the point it’s scary.”

“Is that a good thing or bad thing?” I ask and he shrugs in reply.

“Well I know that you like my mushiness!” I say, feeling oddly defencive. It’s important to me that he doesn’t complain about my mushiness because being friends with me means that you’re going to expect a lot of scary thoughtfulness and kindness. It’s kind of what friendship is honestly.

“It’s okay.” He mutters, very softly.

            “What?”

            “Nothing.”

“Well if you’re going to be friends with me, then you have to see very scary kindness and thoughtfulness. Most especially on your birthdays. Speaking of birthdays, when’s yours?” I’m surprised with the sudden change of topic here.

            “It doesn’t matter.”

“What? Yes it does! It’s the day you were born!” Why won’t he tell me? I groaned. I can’t believe that this is making me frustrated.

“Well I really couldn’t care less about it and you’ll be really scary and thoughtful on my birthday so no thanks.”

“I guess I’ll have to hire a private detective.” I say, hopefully to get him to admit his birthday. And let’s get real here, I will never ever use my money to get something that I want. I’ll just work hard for it.

            “What?”

“I will. Just you wait, within twenty four hours, I’ll know your birthday.” He groaned and sighed.

“That is extremely creepy. Don’t do that.”

“Oh but I will since you won’t tell me.” I say, taking my phone out and pretending to dial someone. I raise the phone to my ears and pretended to talk to someone.

“Oh hey… yeah listen I need a favour. Yes, yes the pay will be good of course. I need you to-” I was cut off with the sound of loud music blaring in the background. “Uhm… do you mind?” I say, giving him a pointed look.
