The rest of the week came and went quickly, the stress of school already weighing heavily on your head. Sure, the teachers had been more forgiving and nicer to the students in this school, but the workload and expectations already felt heavier than your old school.
You suspected that it had to do with the fact that there were smaller classes, and, therefore more expectations put on students. In city schools, there were more students and less time for the teachers to care too much about each individual student, making it easier for some to pass by unseen. Here, it was like every student was under a microscope. It didn't help that almost everyone was begging to get to know the new kid, and you just wanted to be left to Thomas' friends.
Despite it all, though, you were getting closer to the rest of the group. Brenda sat beside you in all but one class, which was the dreaded chemistry class that you were forced to take. In that class, you sat beside Newt. He understood the subject well, and promised to help you understand it better.
Speaking of Newt, you spent a lot of time talking with him over the past few days. You had swapped numbers with the rest of the group through the iMessage chat that Thomas added you to, but you spent most of your time texting his best friend. He was eager to get to know you, and for you to get to know him. The conversations lasted hours, never dull or dry. It was like you had been friends for a while, and not just a short five days.
You were nothing short of excited to reach the end of the day, wondering what the weekend would have in store for you. The girls often talked about what went on during the weekends, and you realized that there was rarely a day that would pass where you weren't going to be hanging out with anyone. Whether it was causing general havoc and having fun or doing homework together, you would be spending lots of time with the group.
Friday morning and afternoon were spent with a tense knot of anticipation and excitement building in your chest, but it quickly turned to boredom once you came home, finding yourself with nothing to do but bother Thomas. Though, even that got boring after about an hour. You would've spent some time with Chuck, but he was spending the night at a friend's house. In fact, you had gotten so bored that as soon as the clock struck 7:00, you were practically dragging Thomas out the door.
You were practically bouncing in your seat when you picked up Teresa and headed to the diner. And, after what felt like an agonizingly long time, you pulled into the diner parking lot. Inside, at the booth Teresa and Thomas seated you at merely weeks ago, you found a few of your friends.
The warmth from the diner washed over you as you stepped inside, the bell jingling softly. Greetings came from your left side as you approached the booth, where only three people were seated. On one side sat Gally, and on the other were Minho and Newt. You sat on the end of the booth, next to Newt, while Thomas and Teresa slid in next to Gally.
"Sonya and Brenda are gonna be here soon," Newt said. "And Sonya said she was gonna bring Harriet with her."
"Harriet?"
"Sonya's girlfriend." Teresa explained, causing you to nod.
Easy chatter sparked up between the six of you as you all waited for the remaining three women to arrive, who showed up not long after you had. Since there wasn't enough room in the booth, a waitress came by and pushed a nearby table over to accommodate for the overflow of teenagers, moving so casually it looked as if it was part of her routine.
After the others took their seats, Sonya sitting next to you, Brenda at the head of the table, and Harriet across from her girlfriend, orders were placed. After several recommendations from Harriet and Brenda, you chose to get the special - and the food that Mickey's diner was famous for - the loaded burger meal.
