Chapter four: Lighter

"A party?" "Yeah, in our common room at 9. You and your friends can come...if they want" The Hufflepuff boy in front of me said, making that brief pause after seeing the emotionless faces of Regulus and Severus who looked at him dead in the eye. "Someone will be outside to open the door for everyone. It's nothing too formal, just make sure no professor sees you when you're close to the common room" he smiled at me, avoiding the boys' stares "Thanks for thinking of us, we'll be there" I smiled "Talk for yourself, Smith" Regulus muttered, making Severus giggle softly. I rolled my eyes at them before slightly turning back to the boy "At least count me in" I said, his smile appearing again "Great! See you there" he said before walking away.

"Why do you have to be so mean all the time?" I asked with a feeble smile "That invitation was directed to you, Becca. Hufflepuffs are way too polite to invite just one person when others are present, so he added the 'and your friends' bit out of kindness" said Regulus, looking as the boy walked away "How do you know he did?" I asked curiously "That's how they work," Severus said plainly "You people just love fitting people in a box of adjectives and traits just because they belong to a certain house, huh?" I questioned, leaning back in the wall behind us, between the two of them "Yes" they answered in unison, making me laugh a bit harder than last time, Regulus cracking a small smile after I did.

I had gone to many parties during my time in France. They were full of pretentious people, way too fancy for some and fancy enough for their rich, fancy friends. They were always accompanied by their kids; me being one of them every time my parents attended. We were all completely aware of how they behaved. Being rich in this world marks you out as a competitor, a winner, regardless of if you began in the slums or with a silver spoon, so they assumed they were better and common folks weren't worthy of their time.

And don't get me wrong, some of the sons and daughters of these people didn't even care about having a happy childhood, their parents decided that said parties were made for them to start making connections with other families that inevitably would reduce in financial relationships. But others, like me and a couple of other friends, stole food and a few shots of fire whiskey to spend the evening on the rooftops of the huge manors we hung out at.

I had good people with me, I miss them sometimes but to be honest, I knew they'd forget about me and stop writing after my first week here. Exactly what happened. I suppose it must be different here since we're all teenagers that aren't supposed to be attending parties in other common rooms. After two weeks of being here, it was time to get to know other people around the castle, and if they didn't want to go, I'm sure Evan would.

"We should get to class Becca," said Snape as he started walking away from us, not caring a single bit if I was following him. "See you in lunch Regg" "Sure" he answered, placing his hands on his pockets and turning on his heels to walk in the opposite direction from where we were heading. We arrived at the classroom right before the bell rang. I sat at an empty table, the empty seat next to me being occupied by Evan who came running and entered before Professor McGonagall could. "Mrs. Smith" Evan greeted, catching his breath "Mr. Rosier," I said back, smiling softly.

The lesson started, McGonagall's voice echoing through the room as everyone remained quiet since we didn't want detention or a lecture on responsibility from her. In the end, Evan agreed to attend with me to the party because we knew we possibly couldn't be the only Slytherins attending. Plus, being a Hufflepuff party, good food, and quality drinks were assured.
