Chapter five: Ex nihilo
After the incident with the so-called "Marauders", I couldn't stop thinking about Sirius' expression when I said his parents would be extremely proud of his Slytherin-ish behaviour. He's a chatterbox by nature, when you find him dumbfounded, there is every chance that he is in a state of astonishment (positive or negative) for what you have achieved.
I have to admit I felt a little bit guilty when I saw the fear in his eyes. Fear because he knew I was right. Regulus had told me about the problems Sirius constantly had with his family; about blood purity, classism, and overall the sense of superiority they felt over other wizards. To this day, I still can't understand how he opened up to me about his brother's business with their family like that. At the time, I guessed Reggie cared enough to justify his brother slightly, as if trying to convince us, and himself in the process, that it wasn't entirely his fault to behave the way he did.
Things between us stayed neutral...in fact, was there even an "us"? I didn't care anyway. He looked like a nice person before that night, but looks can be deceiving and that is a known fact by everyone. The outcome wasn't as bad as I thought, detention with Evan who got caught while trying to get to the Ravenclaw common room accompanied by the lovely lady he met at the party didn't seem that bad.
He told us all about it; how mad Flitwick' was, his amazing power of convincing him on giving him some small form of punishment, how he'd meet the girl again, and all types of bullshit we weren't interested in but still was entertaining to hear. Regulus and Sev were vocal about how they didn't care, but I encouraged him to continue just to see the bored expressions on both my friends. Evan was something else.
I can't say I've had many good friends, though there are some notable standouts. So what I can say is that they are rare gems, the right kind of treasure to keep in your chest. Evan could become one of them. His smile lit up the room, he knew damn well how to make everyone laugh with his stupid jokes, and he was a great listener as well. He knew how to keep that balance between being fun and giving a friend advice or just shutting up and listening.
Detention with him shouldn't be that bad. I predicted it'd be fun. "Smith! What a lovely surprise my darling!" he exclaimed when he saw me walking towards him and Hagrid, both standing next to his hut "Please Rosier, you know the pleasure..." a made a brief pause, getting closer to him and bowing while slightly tilting my head upwards "...is all mine" I continued, making both men in front of me laugh
"It's detention! You're supposed to be miserable while you're at it" Hagrid said while laughing along "Let's keep a positive atmosphere mate" said Evan smiling at the giant who politely smiled back. He explained that our only task was walking with him for about two hours looking for anything off in the Forbidden Forest. We were both wearing leather jackets and sweaters underneath, it was obvious winter was coming right after this season. Autumn and winter will come to their feasting table to exchange goblets, and I can't wait.
It is the type of coldness that reaches into my bones, as if my heart were a door left wide open to the icy wind, slamming only to open again. The only thing to do is keep moving, keep heading into the woods and hoping that the steady warmth of my heart is enough. I always loved nature as well, creatures muggles were well aware of were marvellous to me, adding all the magical creatures that could be found here...well, let's say I could enjoy detention just this once.
