Chapter seven: Trials

A calm atmosphere was palpable in the common room's air. Regulus, Evan, Severus, and some other students who I didn't talk to much but considered good people like Lucinda, Puck, Ariel, and Ronnie were hanging out in the couches and tables. The water from the black lake created brief and relaxing sounds when it crashed into the windows, a few creatures swimming by every now and then. All that, accompanied with the little crackling of the fire that Regulus lighted as soon as we all came in. It was the end of an eventful day, and nothing important happened really, our bodies just needed more rest than usual.

Regulus was laying on the rug, reading while Snape sat beside him doing some homework with his back pressed against the couch where Evan and I were sitting just looking at the fire in comfortable silence. A comfortable silence Evan decided to ruin.

"The Quidditch trials are on Thursday guys" "Evan..." I warned, tired of the situation that I had been encountering since Monday. As if I didn't know what he was trying to do. "I'm telling you, you'd be the best seeker this house has ever seen" he repeated, looking at me, completely determined to make me take the stupid trials "How could you know? You've never seen me fly" "Actually, Quidditch is not only about flying, Becca" Regulus interfered, putting his book down and getting in the conversation "It's about reflexes, balance, and being clever. All that while riding a broom, of course" he explained, smirking in the end at his own 'joke' "Listen to the little degenerate over there, Smith" Evan giggled

"Since when are you so interested in Quidditch?" I asked, now looking at Regulus who seemed to be very invested in our discussion "I like it quite a lot, always have" he smiled "Then you take the bloody trials" I suggested "Like hell he's doing that again" Severus giggled, all the boys laughing, clearly knowing something I didn't. Evan noticed and decided to explain. "Reggie here did his trials as soon as he turned twelve. He was hit by a bludger in the head and fell to the ground" he laughed at the memory "It wasn't as fun as it sounds" Regulus rolled his eyes playfully.

"I thought we could start playing Quidditch after our second year?" I asked, wondering how he could play when he turned twelve "Daddy made some calls and got him to take trials on his own right after his birthday" Evan said, making Regulus nod "I learned the hard way why we can't play at such young age" He smiled again "But seriously, Smith. You'd make a fair Quidditch player, any position you decide to play" Reggie finished, going back to his book now.

As any other wizard who doesn't live under a rock, I had a pretty fair amount of knowledge on Quidditch. Before I left Hogwarts, I looked up to the girls and boys giving it all on that field, the cheers and screams of the crowd when one team scored and how the passion seemed to break any boundaries or friendships that were soon recovered after the match was over. I liked Quidditch. It's not like I watched every single match, but I did enjoy them. And I'd lie if I said that playing for my house's team didn't cross my mind every once in a while.

I felt soft taps on my shoulder coming from behind me. As I turned around, I saw Lucinda with a kind smile "Hey, if you want to try you're very much welcome in the team, Becca. To be honest, we could use a few more girls" she said, before turning away and leaving without an answer. After thinking about it briefly... "Fuck- Fine, I'll try" I accepted, hearing Evan and Regulus cheering and repeating my name in a whisper trying to simulate the noise students made during matches.
