I was three years old when it happened but, it's one of the most vivid things I remember. Mother had just had my sister Hanna and suffered some complecations. She was losing far too much blood and father knew she wasn't make it so, one by one we went in to say goodbye.
Leah the eldest was first. I remember she didn't bother to fix her hair that day so her brownish-blonde flowed down to the middle of her back. There were tears running down her face which worried me.
When she came out she had this look of absolute fear and sadness across her face. I knew what was happening now. My sister Ruthie was next.
Then me.
I tried to control my tears but they were going everywhere. I entred my mothers room and saw her laying on her bed, holding my sister Hanna. Mother smiled at me, probably hoping to raise my spirts.
"Come here, Madeleine." My mother called me.
"Yes, mother?" I said in my small voice.
" Don't cry my dear. I'll always be with you, even if I leave this earth. If I go today, we will meet again in Hevan."
"I love you mother." I cried through my salty tears.
" I love you too, Madeleine." She said.
She took one last breath and then closed her eyes. My childish mind told me she was just sleeping. She never woke up. My sisters Jane, Maggie, and Kate never said goodbye. I'd rather never say goodbye than watch my mother die.
I watched my mother die and I was left with the memories of it.
