At six o'clock, my alarm clock started to beep. I turned it off and sat up in bed, trying to wake up a little more.
"Today's Friday, the dance is tomorrow, I have my dress picked out, and all I need to do now is get a date. Today is the day I shall ask Matt," I decided as I left my bedroom after getting dressed (I wore my prettiest shirt and mini-skirt combo).
"So, what are your plans at school for today?" Aunt Amanda asked after Gwen, and I sat at the table.
"I'm going to try and find a date for prom, so I don't have to go alone," I explained.
"Today is the day when Gavin decides who he's going to the masquerade prom with," Gwen added dreamily.
"I thought he was going with his girlfriend," I explained, confused.
"They broke up like two weeks ago, so he had all of the girls who wanted to go with him put their name in his football helmet. Today he's going to pull a name out of the helmet, and whosoever name he draws will be his prom date," Gwen answered.
After finishing breakfast, Gwen and I packed our bags and brushed our teeth (I made extra sure my teeth and hair looked good, so it would be more likely for Matt to say yes when I asked him out to prom).
...
The first half of my school day went on seemingly ordinarily. No homework was assigned because of the event, thankfully.
Although I will say that English class was pretty entertaining. Our teacher, Ms. Rayne, had us finish the poetry we were writing, and near the end of the hour, she took volunteers to read what they wrote. Gavin, always wanting to be the center of attention, volunteered first. He stood up and looked at his paper.
"You are the most gorgeous women who have ever lived; there's nothing better than what your parents could've gived. Your hair is softer than silk, and your voice is like milk. I wish that I could kiss all of you, unfortunately; there will be only one or two," Gavin read.
All of the girls who were head over heels in love with him (so pretty much the entire class) seemed as though they were going off to la-la land.
"That was the stupidest poem I've ever heard; it didn't even make sense," I thought to myself as I tried to hold back the giggles.
I traversed to my locker to get my lunch and made my way down to the lunchroom.
"I'll ask Matt as soon as I finish my lunch," I thought to myself as I walked to my usual lunch table where Gwen was already waiting.
"Well, this is the lunch that Gavin chooses the lucky girl who gets to be his prom date. I've prayed every night since I put my name in the helmet that I'm that girl. I just question why not everyone didn't put their name in," Gwen explained, sounding a little nervous (she was probably as worried as I was).
"I honestly don't understand why all of these girls are so obsessed with that guy. The only legitimate reason I can think of is that he's the captain of the football team. I bet that if he were just another football player, they would treat him like his younger brother Alan," I admitted.
"He's also quite handsome," Gwen responded, lost in thought.
"There are more important things to a guy than how he looks," I thought to myself but didn't say aloud because I didn't want my cousin to be mad at me. Also, to be honest, I always found him only alright-looking at best, but I kept that to myself as well.
"Hey, girls. I'm guessing you're talking about the prom that's going to take place tomorrow," my other friend, Johnny, added as he joined us at our table.
"That's right, and I hope that it's the best night of our high school life," Gwen replied.
"Do either of you have dates?"
"Nobody knows that I exist, so I will be going solo on the big night," I said.
"I'll find out soon," Gwen added as she tried to catch a glimpse of Gavin.
"So, Mollie, I was thinking-" Johnny began.
"Okay, okay, everyone quiet, it's time for the big announcement!" Gavin announced to the almost quiet lunchroom with a megaphone on full blast as he stood on four chairs stacked on top of each other on his table.
"Wow, that was surprisingly loud and didn't seem all that necessary," Johnny said in disgust.
"As all of you know, the masquerade prom is taking place tomorrow, and I still do not have a date. Every female student in this school has put their name in my football helmet. I am now going to pick a name out, and whosoever name I draw will be the lucky girl," Gavin continued, still talking into the megaphone. He snapped his fingers and had Alan come to him with his football helmet that contained all of the names of the girls who were in love with Gavin.
"Please have it be me, please have it be me," Gwen prayed quietly.
As Alan shook the helmet around, I began to look around the lunchroom to see where Matt was sitting to make my route to him after seeing who was going with Gavin to prom.
"And so, the one lucky girl that gets to be my date for the masquerade prom is..." Gavin began before pulling out the piece of paper he had drawn from his helmet. He unfolded the paper and read, "Gwen Wilson."
"I can't believe it. Gavin Gordon actually chose my name!" Gwen exclaimed before letting out a scream of delight.
"Congratulations, Gwen," I told my overjoyed cousin before going to the trash area with my garbage. Once everything was thrown out, I tried to make my way to where Matt was sitting because it was now or never to ask him out. I was about twenty feet away from my crush when suddenly...
"Hey, Mollie," Johnny greeted from behind.
"Oh, hi, Johnny," I responded.
"I have something to ask."
"Okay, but please make it quick," I responded before catching a glimpse at Matt to make sure he was still there.
"I thought that since neither of us has dates for the prom, maybe we could go together," Johnny explained.
All of a sudden, I felt as though time had stopped moving.
