Prologue
November 26th, 2008
This is the date that changed the entire outlook of the Indian subcontinent within a matter of a few hours. The horrific terror attacks in Mumbai were like nothing the world had ever seen. And while lives were lost, and political views were changed forever, there were some burning questions that lingered on – How was an attack of this magnitude even allowed to happen in a country that boasts of some of the best Intelligence Agencies in the world? What happened to the famed Indian Intelligence Agencies like R.A.W. and I.B.? Who was going to be held accountable for this unprecedented Intelligence failure?
In the following weeks, amidst furious public outcry and a dire need for action, the powers that be went into a huddle to figure out what went wrong. The outcome of this huddle – a new intelligence body called the National Investigation Agency. The N.I.A. was formed in December 2008 and was given sweeping powers to ensure that such an attack never happened on Indian soil ever again.
With changes in time and changes in the power structure, the N.I.A. by 2019 became one of the most powerful and secretive Intelligence Agencies in the world and the foremost Intelligence agency to operate within India. It is the only truly federal agency in India on the lines of the FBI in the United States. It is credited with foiling multiple terror plots across the country with speed, skill and guile.
