I woke up, gaining consciousness once again. My head was pounding, and I was definitely not at home, or in prison, for that matter. On the walls were some tiles, and next to them were hundreds of beds. Not just any beds, but bunk beds as well. I turned my head over to see that there was a stage, and many people walking around.
As I stood up, I felt something scratching at my neck. I looked down to see it was a zipper. I was wearing a tracksuit, with the number 457. I noticed that there were many other people, also wearing a tracksuit. They were all a mossy green, with a white zipper in the middle. It was quite comfortable. I pulled the zipper down a bit to prevent it scratching me.
I went back to inspecting the walls. There were some drawings on them - many simplistic people in fact. They looked quite interesting. I looked around to see there were six of them.
Suddenly, a loud racket in the middle of the room caught my attention. I looked over to see it was a tall man, labelled as number 101, who was fighting a shorter girl who was 067. 067 looked quite cold, her eyes blazing with hatred for the towering man obscuring her view.
Then, a man labelled 456 pushed 101 out of the way. I ran over to the scene.
"A thug and a pickpocket-" said 456. However, I didn't hear the rest of conversation, and this left me baffled. Out of the blue, some men in red baggy, tracksuits came over toward us and onto the stage.
"I would like to extent a hearty welcome to you all." who seemed like the leader red tracksuit spoke. He had a black mask with a white square etched on. I realised he was explaining the rules, or why we were here maybe. Either way, everybody was listening, and I thought I ought to as well.
"Everyone here will participate in six different games over six days. Those who win all six games will get a handsome cash prize."
I heard murmuring across the whole room. I did need money. After all, I was caught carrying a sack full of money, so why not play these games?
"How are we supposed to believe you?" I heard somebody shout on the other side of the room.
"You suddenly put us to sleep and took all our valuables and items away, then bring us to this mysterious place. Now you show up saying you'll pay us a lot for playing a few games? Do you expect us to believe that?"
I thought that was a good point. Are we even safe here? Was this some random joke the guards decided to play on me?
The leader red tracksuit man spoke. He was calm, despite the sudden attack.
"We reluctantly took those measures to maintain our confidentiality bringing you here. We'll return everything once these games are over."
Nice save, I thought, as another person spoke up. This time, it was a woman.
"How come you're wearing those mask things?"
"We do not disclose the faces and personal information of our staff to the participants. It's a measure we take for the fairness of games and privacy. Please understand."
I thought about this. The fairness of games? Were they actually serious? This was definitely a prank. How would it affect them with us knowing their identity? These were probably the police trying to teach us a lesson, only in a much more childish way than I thought they would.
"I don't trust a word you said," a man spoke. I whipped around to look at who said it. This man had glasses on. He looked quite old, but wise. He seemed like he was very intelligent. His fringe was put to one side of his head, as to keep it out of his eyes. Number 218. I'll remember that for future reference.
"You lured, kidnapped and locked us up in here," 218 continued, "You make all kinds of excuses to keep yourselves hidden after all these illegal actions you have done. Give us one good reason why we should trust you."
I looked towards the men in the red suit. They just stood there, as though nothing had happened.
"Player 218, Cho Sang-woo." Leader red suit said. Suddenly, a video started playing. It looked exactly like "Cho Sang-woo". It showed his exact life while the leader of the red suits narrated it. Cho Sang-woo looked quite amused and surprised. I felt like this really meant those people.
After that, many more people's faces were shown. I felt all the air knock out of me when they showed my face. However, it was only a short moment.
When the video finally finished, the red suit man spoke again. "Will you go back to living your lousy lives being chased by your creditors, or will you take the last opportunity we're offering right now?"
Then people started asking questions again. They weren't willing to answer all of them, as they included things about the games we were playing. However, player 456 asked a question that caught everybody's attention - "How much money are we getting from playing these games?"
Red suit leader pressed a huge red button on a remote, and suddenly a piggy bank started falling from the roof. It looked huge.
"Your prize money will be accumulated in the piggy bank after every game. We will disclose the amount to everyone after the first game is over. If you do not wish to participate, please let us know now."
