Suddenly, the PA came up again, explaining the rules:
The first game is red light, green light. You can move forward while the tagger shouts "green light, red light." If your movement is detected after the tagger says red light, you will be eliminated. Let me repeat. You can move forward while the tagger shouts "green light, red light." If your movement is detected after the tagger says red light, you will be eliminated. Those who can cross the finish line without getting caught in five minutes pass this round.
The PA finished. The doll had moved to face the tree trunk in front of her. She put her hand onto the tree, and stopped moving.
"THEN LET THE GAME BEGIN."
I saw the timer on the wall begin. The seconds were slowly ticking down and down. The doll spoke, a high, sing-song voice, "Green light."
I started sprinting my way towards the finish line. The doll spoke, "Red light." I stopped immediately. I saw the bleached hair boy tumble, then trip. The doll seemed to detect his movement. Suddenly, he fell to the floor with a sickening jolt. I saw blood pouring out of his mouth.
His best friend spoke, "bro, you can stop the act already." Then, it hit him. He too noticed the blood. He started to sprint at the opposite direction, where the rest of the crowd was, but I proceeded to stay still. I wasn't going to die in such a stupid way, like that boy.
Then, in the corner of my eye, I saw his friend get shot. He fell onto the ground, right in front of a woman. The woman screamed, and everybody started to run to the doors, pounding at them, trying to get out. The canons at the wall shot, at nearly everybody.
After a few seconds, the doll looked back to the tree and said, "Green light."
I ran again, but not so fast that I would fall. I heard footsteps catching up to me. Up till now, I was still wondering whether this was a dream or not. Not a dream, but a bizarre nightmare.
"Red light," the doll sang. She turned her back to face us. I heard a few gunshots, but not as much as last time.
Suddenly, I felt my leg give way. I nearly fell, but somebody managed to catch me before the doll's eyes came to my way. The doll sensed that nobody else had moved, so she looked back to the wall. "Green light."
I looked back to see player 240, holding the back of my tracksuit, smiling slightly at me. She had short hair, barely touching her shoulders. She also had a fringe, even and spread across her forehead. She had a nose piercing, which made her look a lot tougher than anybody else I've met so far. She wore quite a bored expression on her face, as though nobody had died in front of her. I guess I looked bored too.
240 and I ran, side to side. I saw the time on the clock ticking.
--------------------------------------
I was quite close to the finishing line. Around 4 metres. 240 was slightly ahead of me. She was slightly sweating from the heat.
"Green light," the doll sang, for the last time. The clock was ticking, 6 seconds. 240 and I sprinted. I didn't see anybody around me, I just made my legs carry me the way the never had before. My head was pounding from the heat and the energy was draining out of me, like someone was sucking it out with a straw.
2 seconds. I had been one step from reaching it.
1 second. I pounced toward the line, a crowd doing the same behind me.
0.
I heard the timer ring. The remaining few people in the crowd had been shot by the cannons. I was breathing hard, 240 beside me.
