An older man and his daughter bowed deeply to King Uther as Lady Vestalis sat on a chair near the king and his council. I leaned against one of the columns in the throne room, my eyes drifting to the poor girl and her father.

From my conversations with Merlin, I knew that Arthur had saved them from a group of bandits. Despite this knowledge, an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach whenever they were near.

"My name is Aulfric, heir of Tír-Mòr," the older man said. "This is my daughter Sophia."

"You're a long way from home," the king remarked. "What brings you to Camelot?"

"Raiders sacked our home," Aulfric explained. "We barely escaped with what few possessions we could carry."

I felt a gentle tug on my pale purple skirt and glanced down to see Wren smiling up at me. I smiled back, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"These are dangerous times," Uther said, his voice grave. "What will you do?"

"We travel west to Caerleon, where we have family and, I hope, a new life," Aulfric answered.

As Aulfric spoke, I reached for the green ribbon falling from Wren's hair. I carefully tied half her dark brown hair, letting the rest fall in soft waves. Placing a gentle kiss on the back of her hand, I could see Arthur smiling at us from the corner of my eye.

"You must stay here a while; break your journey," Uther offered. "A noble family like yours is always welcome at Camelot."

Aulfric and Sophia bowed deeply before the king as two guards led them out of the throne room.

I picked up Wren, who was now playing with the curls of my white hair and noticed Sophia frowning when she failed to catch Arthur's attention. He approached us as I glanced at Arthur, but Lady Vestalis grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the throne room.

"I need you to go to the market," Lady Vestalis ordered, her voice sharp. "Thea needs a new dress, and Saige wants more books to add to her ever-growing collection."

"Of course, my lady," I replied, nodding.

"Remember what I told you, Carena," she said, lifting an eyebrow. "I won't have you interfere with my daughter's future."

"I understand," I said softly, feeling Wren tuck her head into my shoulder.

"Then off you go," Lady Vestalis said dismissively. "I expect to see you before dinner."
