Akaashi
Hello Kuroo-san. I know it's unusual for me to start the conversation but there's something I need to ask you.

Kuroo raised an eyebrow at the text message but quickly typed out a response.

Kuroo
yeah go ahead

Akaashi
Do books interest you?

Kuroo
depends
what kinds of books??

Akaashi
Manga, novels both in English and Japanese, etc.
What do you think of those?

Kuroo
love manga, like Japanese novels and pretty neutral with English ones
why?

Akaashi
Your birthday gift.
I'm currently out and saw a bookstore.

Kuroo
I'm super flattered and all but you really don't have to get me a gift
Also, get home soon. It's getting late

Akaashi
I'll do so when I find you a birthday gift.
Tell me what you want and I'll get it if I can afford it.

Kuroo
I honestly don't know
i'll appreciate anything you get me

Akaashi
Alright.
How does a light novel or manga sound?

Kuroo
it's good
thanks akaashi :)

Akaashi
You're welcome.
Any specific series?

Kuroo
hmmmmm hunter x hunter maybe???
If ever though, pick one that you like for me

Akaashi
Okay. Any specific volume?

Kuroo
nope
I don't own any of the volumes so any is okay

Akaashi
Alright.
I'll give volume one to you tomorrow during practice.

Kuroo
thanks again akaashi

Akaashi
No problem.

Kuroo put his phone back on the table and sighed, "Wow, I'm getting really old."

It was technically true. In a few hours, he was going to be seventeen just like Bokuto.

He started recalling himself a year ago when he hadn't met Akaashi yet, when he and Bokuto weren't as close, and when Kenma was his only best friend. Now, he has three best friends. His past self probably wouldn't believe it.

Speaking of, he reached out to open a small envelope in his drawer,

To: Seventeen-year-old self

From: Sixteen-year-old self

It was a tradition of his to write himself little messages on his birthday for himself to read the year later on the exact same day but screw it, he was going to read it a bit early this year.

He opened the envelope and unfolded the two genkouyoushi he used to write on, smiling to himself at his past self's messy handwriting, specifically for the kanji. It had gotten better since then, but there were still traces of it that were present in his current handwriting.
