Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound of the heart monitor bounced throughout every corner in the room.

Marie's chest rose and fell with each breath she took. Wires covered every inch of her body and probes were on the side of each temple. Her eyes were sealed shut.

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh....

I could still hear her shattering screams echoing in my head. I squeezed her hand, trying to release the fear I had felt and was still feeling. I gently lifted her hand to my lips to kiss the top. It was still warm. A good sign that she is still alive.

The alarm on Marie's wrist started to go off. And on cue, Vinny walked in with a syringe in hand. She gently inserted the tip of the needle into the IV. You could see the silver liquid make its way into the tube and into Marie's arm. She twitched a little bit as it went in and her heart rate started to spike. I only held her hand tighter, this time with both hands.

"I'm right here. I'm right here."

Soon, all of her stats began to level out.

Vinny walked to the side of the bed where I was at and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Michael... As far as tests show, she is there but not. In the brain scans, it shows all of the activity is in this sort of standstill. Like she is stuck. We don't know what is causing it." She handed me the scans of Marie's brain.

And there it was on paper. She was stuck and we didn't know why.

"Oh, and here is some cream for your burns." Vinny said, as she handed me a round compact.

(FLASHBACK)

I could hear Marie screaming. Ike was pulling me by the shirt to move back but I couldn't. I couldn't leave her there.

"Come on! MOVE!!" People were shouting.

I'm not going to leave her...

A bright beam of light was coming out of Marie's room, it was burning my eyes on immediate glance. I shielded my eyes with the back of my arm and immediately, the light started to singe my skin and clothes. Through the light, I could see on the floor this tiny body writhing and pulsing on the ground. The screams were so piercing, blood started to trickle down my ears. As soon as I reached the center of the room where Marie was, I fell to my knees. I quickly scooped her into my arms and held her with all my strength. Her powers were seeping from every part of her. I could feel the intensity radiating from her as she continued to thrash.

Baby...baby...I'm here....pLEASSSSSSEEEE.....I'm not going to leave you. I'm right here.

(MARIE SCREAMS)

For a split second, she opened her eyes and she made contact with mine, recognizing who I was. They were like silver disks, her pupils were completely gone. One single tear ran down the side of her eye as she wrapped her arms around me.

She buried her face into my chest as she strained to say.

".....help me....."

I lifted her face out of my chest and quickly placed my lips upon hers. Her hands squeezed my back as our kiss deepened. Her lips were so warm, soft, and sweet like fresh honey. I just wanted to hold her closer to my body and keep her safe from the world. I did not want to let her go. I just wanted to take all of her pain away. Protect her from anything. Soon, her body began to ease and the immense glow around us began to dim.

I love you...amor...

With one last pulse, all the energy that was being released began to be pulled back into her body. And just like that, Marie collapsed into my arms and went completely limp.

The whole room was completely charred as smoke and little fires scattered the room. I could smell burning flesh. I looked down at my arms. They were completely black as skin began to fall off in chunks.

I wasn't healing. Why?

I lifted Marie up off the ground as she dangled in my arms. Vinny and the others rushed back in.

"Oh man...." Seth said through his teeth, as he covered his nose, scanning the scene. The smell was obviously intense.

"She...She....." I managed to say to the team as I collapsed to the ground. The adrenaline had run out.

Seth then took Marie from my arms and the others put their arms around me to take me to the hospital wing.

(PRESENT)

I looked down at my arms, they were all scabbed up but at least closed. I opened the compact and began to lather the cream on my arms. Vinny had told me that Marie's powers were becoming more intense and required a higher dosage of 000-000, that Marie wanted to keep it a secret from the rest of the team because she didn't want them to worry.

In short, the 000-000 was overtaking some of her systems and she was starting to loose control.

"You need to keep this information to yourself and don't let Marie know that you know. I need someone who cares deeply about her, to watch over her. Can you do that?" Vinny had told me.

I nodded in response.

I'll protect her...I promise....
