Gilbert's heart felt saddened as he left his cold house to go to school. There was little in his life to brighten his heart and the dark days of winter did not offer any comfort to him. Bash had left him, like everyone else in his life. His home was bare and empty and be realised that he could not just go and jump on a steamship again to escape it. Sebastian Lacroix had not mentioned when he was coming back. Blyth prayed that it was a question of when and not if. While he was constantly busy catching up with his comittments, his step lacked a lust for life. It never did help that he had to pass his parents grave twice a day.
Those days, while long and lonely felt like years away. Here he stood with a smile on his face, and for the first time in a long while - he felt calm and contempt. In this moment however, he concluded that it seemed comical to Gilbert as he watched Sebastian and Mary get married. It was unexpected and completely in charter with his dear friend to marry Mary so quickly. She most likely never expected the out of place Trinidadian would have found a place in the center of her life. But they just fit with each other. Fate had brought them together and it made it easier to belive in more when they were evidence of just that. The possibilities were endless and for the first time Gilbert had little worry about his family farm. Sebastian and Mary would look after it just fine. His parents would be proud to see their home filled with happiness and love again after so long without it.
Medicine was something he had always had a strong passion for it, and after seeing his father and mother pass, he knew that he needed to find out how to do more. If the sky was the limit, then finding ways to protect people from sickness and understand the body better seemed like achivable goals. He was glad that his future and aspirations were in reach.
Seeing Anne join in the celebrations made him happy. He knew that someone who did not take kindly to his family would have no place in his life. Unknowingly Anne Shirley bad already coupled a large spot in it already. Something told him to wait, that they both had alot of growing up to do, besides she was the first girl he had noticed and admired. His father had told him not to settle too early and that love came in the most unexpected of ways. It seemed unreasonable to him to settle with anyone when he had barely gotten to know himself. He had just gotten over the pasina of his father and now knew that he would have to put all waking hours into forwarding his medical career. As the flow of happy people exited the church, Gilbert felt calm. He hadn't been to church since his father was alive. Making peace with God felt like a good first step as he took in a deep breath before standing up and meeting everyone for the festivities. There on the bench he lfe behind sadness and loneliness. He beconned possibility and hope for the first time. This was what he came back for. This moment.
The celebrations were filled with food that he had never tried and music that he had never heard. Regardless of that, he did his best to sample the delusions tasting stews and grilled meats. He even mimicked Sebastian dancing, much to the humor of onlookers. Happiness oozed out of his pours as he watched Sebastian and Mary bickeing to themselves. It had seemed like the whole bog had flooded the area to join the celebrations. The Cuthberts had left prompty after the ceremony as to catch the last train back to Avonlea.
"Gilbert you remember my friends from the laundry?" Mary introduced. She must have noticed all the stares he had been getting as the only white person present. The ladies smiled tentatively as Gilbert did his best to smile.
"Of course. It is a pleasure to see you both again." He added to the ladies shock. They had taken him under their wing as they explained the food on the table and as they watched some men sitting around a table playing a gambling game he had never seen. It seemed that with the two ladies by his side, no one dared even glance in his direction.
"Try some peanut stew hon'"
"No have him eat some pumkin pie"
"Give him everything. He is far too skinny" the ladies bickered around him and stuffed his plate with all sorts of tasty dishes. He had never had this much attention before. He found that he didn't even need to think. He was directed towards an empty spot at rhe table, given a fork and a glass of something he was not sure of. And told to eat. He was only able to eat afew bites of everything, but he enjoyed it all the same. Sebastian and Mary stood bickering in marital bliss as he looked over. Was that what a happy marriage looked like?
Today he celebrated happiness. Both his own and Sebastian, on that afternoon the light twinkled through the grey clouds for the first time in months. It felt as if the whole world had stopped to rejoice this moment. Their moment.
