Being able to work in an actual doctors office with an actual doctor was beyond Gilbert's wildest dreams. Sure his fairing at the sight of a needle was not his highest moment, but he took it as a starting point. He had so much yet to prove to Doctor. At every stage, Gilbert assisted in cleaning up after patients and scribing notes into his notebook during sessions. He seemed to have proved his worth, occasionally on simple procedures the Doctor would ask Gilbert his opinion. Often it was about best practice to sterilise a wound or if the patient exited signs of infections. On this occasion, Gilbert assisted in providing stitches to a gentleman who had hit his head falling off his horse. Fortunately, he did not seem to have injured his brain, however, Gilbert had read that careful observation would be needed to ensure the damage would not be long term. Being in town again gave his days meaning again and more importantly reminded him of the promise he had made his father. There was more to life than the confines of Avonlea.

Today as Gilbert cleaned up from the previous patient. He noticed a girl sitting at the reception desk. He had always taken the back entrance so was shocked to have only noticed another person working there apart from the doctor. She seemed mature and certain of herself, often too consumed in her tasks to even notice Gilbert's presence. He left her be until he walked down the hall to the sound of a conversation. Her sense of humour brought a light smile to Gilbert's face.Doctor Ward had mentioned her name to be Winnifred. The daughter of a good friend of his Apparently with Charlottown lacking in amusements compared to London, the lady required something to do. She was working voluntarily, which made Gilbert's impression of her all the better. It also allowed him to focus on studying diagnosis and assisting Doctor Ward in this practice. Today they had reset a shoulder, checked a pregnant woman's false contractions and prescribed a tonic to assist with a stomach issue.

"You are learning fast. For farmers and factory workers, I would recommend checking their feet, often a foot infection can disuse itself as many other ailments" Doctor Ward mentioned ad they rested for tea. Gilbert took his time to scribble down the note in his book. Days continued and he felt fulfilled each day as he returned home with a brain brimming with knowledge.

On this day, he happened to take the train with Anne. She as per usual did not seem particularly pleased to have only been able to visit on condition of him. She seemed upset, but to Gilbert, her hotheaded nature seemed foolishly placed. He had spent many days in the past for someone to worry themselves over his wellbeing. Marillia acted in that way only because she cared so much about her. As they departed directions after an uneventful train trip, and the promise to meet back there later. Gilbert made the short walk to Doctor Wards little clinic.

"And you don't look any better than our last meeting." Miss Rose's voice had sounded. It did not sound like the type of conversation one would be having in a doctors office. It intrigued him."Or should I call it a dust up. It seemed there's very little the doctor can do for you." he took tentative steps away from the door. What was going on this time, the office didn't open for another hour.

"You really must start taking better care of yourself, young man. You're wasting away"Standing by the arch of the room he waited. "Oh!" she paused for a moment, it took all his mental power not to peek around the corner. His curiosity was brimming with eagerness to see what was going on. "Well! I don't know what type of girl you think I am, but you've brought yourself a date with my father and his shotgun. Though I do get you shot, it'll be me putting you back together and isn't that just the plight of women.

The comment made Gilbert smile as he peaked to see her talking to the skeleton that stood in the corner of the room.

"I should like to say that you have some nerve. But you also have a complete lack of nerves, which'll do you well if you do get shot" He tried to hold in another smile. He failed terribly, it was a pretty good joke even for his country boy ears.

"Hmmm? It was an accident, you say?" she continued. He approached the scene slowly. "Oh, you're awfully handsome when you are contrite, Mr Bones" Winifred Rose had continued in her own little world.

He suddenly felt uncomfortable to be interrupting a private scene. "I can forgive" she started as Gilbert cleared his throat.

"Here for the show are you. Just a ticket for one?" she asked boldly. It was now Gilbert who got caught off guard.

"Mr Bones, do you have the tickets?" she continued. Gilbert felt out of his depth as she continued with her little panto.

"I'm afraid we're all sold out" she met his gaze again. Her cheeks were lightly pink - other than that the young lady showed no sign of embarrassment.

"Good day Mr Blythe"

"Good day, Miss Rose" he spoke finally. He had managed to participate in her conversation after having said very little. It peaked in his mind that Gilbert Blythe knew very little about this girl whom he worked with. Heck, he knew the gaggle of men who sat in the train carriages with him."If Mr Bones is alright with it, might you accept an invitation to tea?" She peaked over around the corner and looked at the lonely skeleton.

With a small smile "That sounds lovely," her acceptance of his invitation brought a small smile to his own face. Before he took a graceful step back into the wall, that he would have sworn had not been there before. Before they embarrassed themselves more, he ducked into the doctor's office to get started with his day.

As they approached Ellinghams Tea Room, it dawned on Gilbert that he had never asked a girl out before. He had not even managed to talk to Anne for a full conversation. He was aware that alike everything that governed their society, there were certain rules and norms to these things. Unfortunately with his mother passing and his father sick most of his life, Gilbert was not privy to these rules. He was glad that Miss Winifred Rose seemed to know them.

For the first time in a long while, he felt a connection with another person. Their little bantering conversation filled his stomach with happy feelings. She was beautiful and witty - he found himself wanting to present himself in a good way towards her.
