Black eyes, black hair, black clothes, and a toothy grin stretching from ear to ear.

From the beginning, Thomas felt uncomfortable with the newcomer. Holding his mother's hand as if he belonged here, and wondering around their farm as if he owned it.

It pissed him off to no end.

"Thomas! Hurry up with the harvest! We're packing and leaving for the market tomorrow remember!" Shouting from a distance was his older brother, Tim,  unlike the strange newcomer who showed up unannounced out of nowhere—this was his real brother. A person who he's known from birth, and has been with him from the beginning.

Thomas grabbed the rim-filled basket of sprite petals, bowing before the vast forest of white flowers before making his leave.

Sprite petals, although these herbs weren't within the boundaries of their family farm, they still liked to harvest them from time to time because of their medicinal properties. However, sprite petals can't do anything alone but when added with other herbs and plants, their properties can be activated to cure simple sicknesses such as the flu, colds, migraines, or tense muscles.

This was where the market came in. They could trade and the Sprite petals for silvers or equally valuable herbs. Since they lived on a ranch, the city center was quite some distance from them, with them needing to leave a day early to even make it to the market and set up base.

"Thooomas~ Wobble's hungryyy~" With his sing-song voice, the stranger Thomas was dreading about made his appearance. Rolling his eyes at the immature boy, Thomas told him off, "Go away, Ten. Didn't mother tell you to round up the slime cubes? Get on with it."

"But I'm already done~ and Wobble is hungry," Ten eyed the basket in his hands, his intentions clear as moonlight. Thomas pulled the basket away from his view, "No way! That stupid bird of yours can sit at our dinner table for all I care, but he can't take our harvest!"

"Can't Wobble get a little taste? It's just some petals,"

"Since it's just some petals, tell Wobble to eat other things!" Thomas sped up his pace, sprinting towards their little wooden home. "Mama! I'm done collecting sprite flowers!"

A distant figure of a woman appeared from one of the windows, she gestured a small wave at him.

Ten stared at them from behind, eyes shifting to the sickly woman waving behind the window.

He turned his head towards the forest looming behind him. Silence. There was a subtle breeze in the air, lightly blowing through Ten's hair, yet the forest remained quiet of all of nature's critters.

Ten's eyes roamed and he took note that up till a certain point near the forest floor the Sprite flowers did not grow.

"Just eat the ones on the floor, Wobble. Not like there's any difference."

"Squawk!" Wobble did not seem happy with the outcome, appearing from the sky randomly and floating down towards him. "Don't be so picky, these humans are only farmers, Wobble. Besides, it was your idea to leave home so early."

Wobble rested on top Ten's head, his head buried in his wings. "...squawk."

"Keep sulking, I won't change my mind."

"Ten, will this be your first time going into town?" Tim asked the shorter boy, his copper and toned arms lifting the luggage they were bringing along onto their wagon.

"Town? Hm, I don't know. I've been in town before...but~ I don't know if it's the same one you're thinking about." Ten was sitting in front of the wagon, watching as Tim loaded the cart. His eyes were always never far from Tim's busy arms.

"That's okay. You may be a little too young for this trip, so you can keep mama company. She'll be resting at home since...well, you've seen her. Not exactly doing well with her health right now."

Watch over your mother? But she won't even be alive by the time you guys make it to town.

"...okay, I'll stay behind with mama~." Ten drawled out his okay, leisurely swinging back and forth from the front of the cart.

"Stay good, Ten. Make sure you stay with mama and take care of her." Tim loaded the last of the cargo, bringing his hand up to Ten's head and rubbing his head of hair gently.

"Thomas and I will make sure to bring back a lot of herbs and fruits, just gotta trust in us! We'll be back before you know it!" Tim picked Ten up by his pits, lifting the boy up and off of the cart. "Go call Thomas, I'm sure he's still talking with mama."

"Okay!" Tim watched Ten dash off, leaving a small trail of dust he had kicked up with his bare feet.

We need to get him a pair of shoes.

"Are you sure you don't wanna go, mama? What if something happens while we aren't here? Timmy and I can protect you! We're capable!"

"Hurry up and leave, child! Keep wasting any more time and you all won't be able to set up shop! I'm not worried, so you stop worrying; else you die instead!" Despite her small and frail size, the woman still had a strong and blazing fire in her. Her voice was booming with energy and did not give off a single hint of softness, despite what her appearance depicts.

The woman knocked at Thomas's head, ruffling his sharp and spiky head of hair. "Ugh, boy, I've told you more than once to tell back that hair of yours. I guarantee the next time I pat you, my hand will be bleeding with holes!"

Thomas grumbled, "But mama! I like my hair like this! And besides, you never lectured Timmy for his hair! It's the same as mine!" "That's cause I can't reach his head anymore! And quit calling your brother that! You know it doesn't fit his image!"

"But didn't you give him that name?" Thomas grumbled under his breath, side glancing at his mother. "It's true, I gave him the name, but that was when he was still an adorable baby! Who would've imagined that he would grow to such an extent! Now the name doesn't suit him at all!"

"A fair maiden would never wed a man with such an unsuitable name!"

"That's not true! Brother has other qualities; qualities every ladies would ever want in a man!"

She bonked Thomas's head with a cane. "Quit your yapping child! Tim is waiting for you, now get going! You've gone and done enough in trying to distract me!" Thomas rubbed his head, a glazed look in his eyes. Mama noticed his hesitance, "What with your glassy eyes? Your mama ain't gonna drop dead on the floor as soon as you leave her, I've lived 27 years of my life taking care of you lots and that wasn't easy work in the least. I consider this as a temporary rest from all your craze, all I got to do is stay home and do nothing! This will be the easiest challenge in my life! Especially after taking after all."

"Now piss off! I waiting for my anticipated vacation, damn it!" With this, Thomas had let out a light chuckle, he raised his arm and wiped his face which made his tanned arm glisten with wetness.

"...Mama, I promise that me and Timmy will bring back so much copper and a lot of food!"

"Well, what are you doing? Get going! You won't be able to keep your promise if you continue to dawdle around me!" She shooed him away with her cane.

Thomas left, his heart a lot lighter than before. Mama will be okay, she's gone through a lot tougher obstacles, and a small sickness won't stop her.

Walking towards the cart, where his brother was waiting, Thomas couldn't help and look back. Despite everything, he still couldn't shake off the looming feeling of uncertainty. A deep pit resided in his stomach, like an unscratchable itch.

Ten watched the two brothers leave from the corridor, the smile on his face had not made an appearance once since he overheard the two's conversation.

Wobble was circling mama's body, his head dragging on the floor as usual.

As the two figures disappeared in the distance, Ten turned his attention back on mama. The woman's grip was loose around her cane, and her body was limp.
