A late train. The French countryside, flying past the woman's vision, unappreciated by one so in love with the beauty of the world. Julia Argent sat up straight, almost uncomfortably so. It was a small form of penance for what she had done to her love. She had sabotaged the best thing in her life.
But she knew. She agreed. No strings. And still she put me in this situation. This was how it had to be. They had both been foolish to expect a different outcome.
But somehow Julia still ended up loving her.

Her black dress rustled. The softness of scarlet fabric against her exposed back reinforced the knowledge that it was her girlfriend holding onto her from behind, as did the tanned arm slung around her waist. She leaned back into her, head on Carmen's shoulder as they watched her brother and new sister-in-law begin their first dance as husband and wife.
"...I found a love for me...darling, just dive right in and follow my lead..."
Julia turned her head slightly so she could see Carmen's face, gray eyes soft in the lighting from the chandeliers, following the happy couple. But tanned skin and auburn hair twisted up into an elegant bun filled her vision, leaving room for little else. She watched her, admiring the way her eyes shone, appreciating the fullness of her lips.
Carmen turned her head to Julia, a smile on her lips. "Come on," she whispered next to her ear, pulling her toward the balcony. "Come dance with me."
Julia smiled imperceptibly, letting Carmen lead her out into the night air.
"...baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms..."
They swayed slowly to the music wafting out into the October night, Carmen's arms around her waist again, Julia's arms loosely slung around her neck, head on Carmen's chest.
Suddenly Julia could feel the vibrations of Carmen chuckling. "Remember that rooftop in Berlin?"
The twinkling lights of the city beneath them.
The way Carmen looked at her.
The night was cold, but Carmen's touch had set her on fire.
Julia's fingers teased the underside of Carmen's bun, reveling in the softness of the sensation of Carmen's hair on her fingertips. "We danced until the sun rose," she recalled, a quiet smile on her lips.
Carmen's arms tightened around her waist. "I knew I loved you that night," she said quietly. Carmen didn't expect her to say anything back, and that was a comforting fact. In this line of work there could be no distractions.
But here they were.
A cool breeze wafted up from the lake and Julia shivered slightly, regretting her decision to wear a backless dress to an October wedding. She smiled slightly through the chill. The look in Carmen's eye when she had come out of the bathroom had more than made up for it, though.
Carmen, ever the thoughtful one, reached up to Julia's hands and enveloped them in her own, bringing them to rest in the pocket of heat between their bodies. It didn't do much to warm her, but the sentiment made up for it. Almost.
