Prologue
Two Years Earlier
“We’ll be back before you know it.” James tells me as we stand in their driveway, saying our goodbyes.
“It’s two years, that’s not going to pass by quickly James.” I say softly and he smiles sadly before taking me in his arms. I close my eyes, trying to soak in every feeling of the brotherly embrace.
When I pull away the other two wait for me to say goodbye to them and dread fills me when my eyes meet his. His goodbye would be the hardest, that much I knew.
I step towards Toby and plaster on a smile.
“Don’t make any other poor girl eat any worms, alright?” I joke, trying to lighten the mood. He chuckles slightly, his brown hair falling into his eyes as he remembers making me eat the worms when we were kids.
“Hey, she may need the protein.” He shrugs and I shake my head.
“Not that badly.”
He laughs again before bringing me into a hug. I hear the beat of his heart as it pounds in his chest softly. I feel him take a deep breath before he pulls away and ruffles my hair.
“By Jen.” He says sadly stepping aside, leaving me with my last goodbye.
I look back over my shoulder and find the other two boys are already in the car, talking softly with their parents. I turn back around and my eyes meet his blue ones, eyes so blue I could drown in them. And right now, I wish I could. It would save me from having to say goodbye, save me from having to let them go.
“Welp, here we are.” Preston says softly, trying to make my smile as the corner of his lips turn up slightly.
“Here we are.” I agree nodding.
He takes a step forward and we both close the distance, him taking me tightly in his arms, resting his head on the top on mine. His heart beats faster than Toby’s with emotion that he is feeling. I wrap my arms around him tightly, never wanting to let go.
“Don’t forget me.” I breath, tears stinging my eyes.
“I wouldn’t if it was even possible.” He murmurs, his chest rumbling with his deep voice.
“I wish you didn’t have to leave.” I tell him, the tears spilling over and onto my cheeks.
“You and me both Jen.”
We stand in silence for a moment, just holding each other, taking it all in.
“Preston come on, let’s go Bud, you’re going to miss your flight.” His dad calls from the car, making him pull away.
I love you!
My mind screams for me to say it, to let the words topple from my mouth, trying to force them from my mouth. But I clamp it shut so tightly so, forcing them not to be spoken.
“I guess this is goodbye.” I whisper, looking into his eyes.
“No its not, I’ll see you again, this isn’t goodbye Jennifer Sprouse.” He says firmly, taking my hand in his.
No matter how firmly he said it, or how many times he said it, I knew deep down inside it was.
“We will call and email you every day, I promise.” He promises firmly.
I nod slowly and look back into his blue eyes.
“Then see you later.” I say sadly.
“Yea, see you later.” He says softly, taking a step towards me and pressing a kiss onto my lips. I am to a taken back to kiss him back and my whole body freezes, before I can gather myself and kiss him back he pulls away and looks me in the eyes with his piercing blue gaze.
“I love you Jennifer Sprouse and when I get back, I will make you my world.” And with that, he turns and walks to the car.
“Wait!” I cry, making him turn around as I run to him and pull him into my arms, tears streaking my cheeks. “You didn’t give me a chance to say it back.” I say softly as his arms go around me.
“I didn’t know if you would.”
“Well this just shows you that you don’t know everything.” I laugh slightly, making him pull me to him tighter while he laughs too. “I love you too Preston.” I whisper, pulling away and pressing my lips to his, this time he is the one frozen. I pull away and smile slightly before he smiles back. I wave and he smiles before walking back to the car.
I watch as it pulls out of the driveway and down the road. I see all three of the boys pull their bodies out of the windows of the cars and look back at me, waving their arms in the air.
