You found yourself seated on a healthy part of the grass, as the rest was dried up and destroyed from training. One leg was propped up, a hand slumping on it as a beautiful multi-coloured butterfly landed on your finger.

It looked rare, maybe it wasn't, but it was something you'd never seen before. The butterfly's wings glowed, lightly fluttered as you stood up, not wanting to endure the prolonged teacher's lecture of ninja stuff. You were somewhat sure you'd become a Jonin, as you had a decent amount of skill, just spaced out easily when listening to others.

Whilst the teacher dismissed the group, you spotted a good friend of yours sitting on the docks, canvas flat on his thighs and legs dangling above the water current below.

"What are you painting?" You watched as the precision of his hand created fine smooth strokes using the brush, ending it off with a flick and turning his attention to you.

"Y/N, did you just finish training?"

"I didn't do much."

"Okay, makes sense." Sai joked, words heartily followed by a chuckle. "I was painting the landscape of the mountains in the distance, I've just ran out of ideas on what to draw next."

"What about the trees?" A finger points to the direction of the cherry blossom trees, he shakes his head, stating he has practically drawn all of the scenery he could find in Konohagakure. His onyx eyes catch sight of the rare species of butterfly on your finger, it interested him greatly, as an idea popped into his mind.

"I think I know what I'll paint."

"What is it—?"

"Not telling you, it's gonna be a surprise, Y/N." He gives you a smile, acknowledging the way your expression changed. Your suggestion was that he shows you his artwork later, in which he accepted and eyed as you disappeared.

He had known you ever since he first joined Kakashi's Team 7 and filled in for Sasuke since he was absent. His developing feelings continued to grow, there was a tightening knot in his gut urging him to confront you about how he feels towards you. Maybe some day. Finding a new blank canvas, his fingers comfortably curled around the mechanical pencil and allowed his hand to wander, trying his best to draw your exact facial shape and body by memory.

"Hey, I finished it."

Sai really liked art, it's a fun and enjoyable hobby to take up, but it does require a bit of skill. He thought, what would you think of the artwork? Would you like it? He didn't want to overthink too much, but he certainly strived to make it look gorgeous. You were quite the honest person, so he figured you would be honest when it came to judging his work.

Sai handed you the canvas, angling it down slightly. You took one good look at it, and your face brightened up ecstatically, a delighted expression gracing your face while you profusely thanked him. In total, it took him several hours to complete, and to add in outstanding smaller details, but it was for you. Sai wanted it to look nice.

Sai painted you posing, sitting down in front of cherry blossom trees. In the art, your hand was raised, the same butterfly you saw yesterday was on it, fragile water-coloured wings spread in the air, whilst you had a calm neutral facial expression; observing the insect. You repeated how appreciative you were, saying the work was so beautiful.

"Yes, I think it's beautiful too, I drew you after all."
