♠♥Chapter 6♣♦

The next day, Charlie steps out of biology and finds Mason leaning against the vibrant blue hallway next to her door. At the sight of her, his brown eyes lighten and he flashes her a playful grin. "Hey, Charlie."

Charlie raises an inquisitive brow. "Mason." She glances around the hall wondering if he's waiting for someone else, because it isn't often he comes hunting her down.

"I was wondering if you were free this afternoon?" His eyes flick down the hall, looking on instinct to see if Asher or Ty's coming for her.

"Depends." Charlie props her arm up on his shoulder and leans into him. "What do you have in mind?"

"Dance lessons." He grins.

Charlie snorts and pushes away from him. "That so? What kind? The horizontal Tango?" She jokes, assuming he's joking.

"Well..." Mason tips his head. "I wouldn't mind, but sadly, this is the vertical kind. Avalon dragged me into this shit and bailed." Pulling out his phone, Mason turns it so she can see the text from his twenty-year-old sister.

I can't go. Get some girl to go with you. Don't you dare flake. I paid for this shit.

A look of her amused shock passes over her face. "You're not joking."

"Trust me, I wish I was." Mason places his foot on the wall. "She got it into her head she wanted to take ballroom dancing."

"So obviously the easiest way of doing that is rueing your baby brother into doing it with you and then ditching." Charlie smirks. "I like Avalon."

Mason's eyes narrow. "Don't encourage her. I got nominated after her boyfriend bailed. She's probably working or going to see the idiota instead. And this is our fifth class." He pushes away from the wall. "She's made the rest."

Charlie's smile widens as she holds her hand out to him. "Well then, Italian Stallion, let's go so you can show me that fancy footwork."

He glances around the halls briefly before taking her hand and leads her outside where his mother, a sweet Italian American, she's known since middle school, picks them up. At the sight of her, a smile crosses his mother's face. "I thought it would be you when he texted me Avalon couldn't make it, but he'd find a girl. How are you doing, Charlie?" A look of sadness crosses her face. "I'm so sorry about Lindsey. I remember you both coming over for Halloween. She was such a sweet thing."

"Thanks, and I'm doing alright." Charlie lies through her teeth. No one really wants to know how she's falling apart on the inside over the loss of one of her best friends. She knows they just want to pass on their sentiments to ease their conscience and move on to their happy little lives.

Charlie climbs into the back seat of the suburban. On the way to the dance studio, Mason and Charlie talk about nothing in particular. It's been awhile for them to just hang out like they did in middle school. When his mother drops them off at a small dance studio, Mason lightly sighs. "Welcome to my hell."
