Chapter Three

When I find my voice, I whisper, “What?” Completely forgetting that I am not supposed to be talking to Doctor John.

“I know, it’s a shock. And your life will change somewhat. But worse things could’ve happened to you. At least you’re alive.”

At least I’m alive? At least I’m ALIVE?!

“At least I’m alive? Are you kidding me, doctor? I’m an artist! I draw, I do stuff with my hands. I LOOK AT STUFF AND CREATE IT AGAIN ON PAPER. THAT USES MY EYES. I might as well have just died.”

If I could be crying right now, I would be. My voice is breaking as it is.

“Wait, I didn’t tell you all of it. Hold up.” There’s more? Oh yay. I honestly feel like I’ve been stabbed, and I can hardly breathe. I don’t think I’ll be alive if he tells me more.

“It’s better news this time. There is a surgery we can do, but if it works you will still be mostly blind, but you will be able to see shapes and colors.”

“What’s the catch?” I ask, monotone.

He clears his throat. “Uh, it could damage your brain. Your nose or ears could also be harmed in the process. We don’t usually try this surgery at all, because there is so much at stake, but we recently have had some new techniques that we could use. You can decide. It is you and your mothers decision.” He goes quiet, and I’m not going to be the one to break the silence.

He sighs again and starts to say something, but then stops, and I hear him leave the room and close the door.

I can’t think. I could be blind. I could be blind. Blind. No eyesight whatsoever. No colors. No trees. No flowers. No pictures. No movies. No books. No writing. No painting. No drawing. No shopping. No computer. NO COMPUTER!!!! MY ONLINE LIFE WILL BE RUINED FOREVER!!!!

I have to do the surgery. But if I do do the surgery, I might become deaf. And deaf is almost as bad as no eyesight. No music. I might as well die right here.

I slowly fall asleep, trying to ignore the thought of a life without vision.

Hi Tiffany

Uh… who are you? And are you… in my dream?

*chuckles softly* Yes. I am in your dream. Do you remember who I am?

Well, being that I can’t see you, no I don’t remember who you are.

Think harder… on the airplane? Do you remember who you sat next to?

I don’t remember the airplane ride!

Think, Tiffany

Hey, don’t make me think! I was in a plane crash, and I’m in the hospital. Thinking too hard is bad for me.

Well, I’m dead. So we are even.

Wait- you’re dead? Oh… did you die in the plane crash?

Very good. Yes, I did. I sat next to you on the plane… do you remember now?

Were you that author? Who I was talking to?

Score one for Tiffany.

Oh. I’m sorry you died.

That’s alright. You didn’t kill me. Now, I have a proposition you might like.

Oooh sounds cool.

Yes, you might say it’s ‘cool’.

Okay. So… what is it?

Seeing as you don’t remember much about the plane ride, I’ll just tell you as opposed to asking if you remember. On the plane, you mentioned how you really like drawing faeries and magic folk. Then I believe that I told you how I wrote a book series about that, and how I was about to start a new one. Then the plane crashed, and I died and you lost your eyesight.

Don’t remind me. Also, if you’re dead, how are you talking to me?

This is a dream, Tiffany.

Right. Sorry. Go on.

Anyways, I have a deal. If you do the surgery, I’ll make sure it works and you’ll get all of your eyesight back-

What?!

With an exception.

*snort* Right, of course. There’s always an exception.

I mill make sure you get complete eyesight back, but you will see my world.

Um… your world? Like… death?

No, no, not death, my world. From my books. In my books series, I created a world of magic and adventure. With pixies, and goblins, and magic folk. You will be able to see, but it will be a mix of my world and the real world.

That is possibly the weirdest deal I have heard in my entire life.

Take it or leave it. Oh, and you will only see my world for about a month. After that you will still be able to see, but it will be only the normal world.

Well... ok! Yeah, I’ll do that. Awesome. Nice meeting you, miss author lady. I’m sorry I forgot your name.

Alexandra Motesto. Just call me Alexandra.

Thanks, Alexandra. Uh… bye! Have a nice… death?

I will, thanks. Nice speaking to you, Tiffany.
