You slowly watched as the shy boy you knew and loved turned into a monster. Hawk-No- Eli, used to be so kind, so shy and quiet. You and him were best friends before he joined Cobra Kai, now he barely spoke to you.
For weeks you were hearing about all the trouble he was getting into now that he was in some karate cult, and you almost thought you were better off without him. But each night you still thought of all the things you missed about him, and each night you wiped your tears away, wishing he was with you.
"I don't understand what I did wrong," You told Samantha while on FaceTime. "I miss him so much, and we were just friends!"
"Woah woah, are you saying you like him?"
"I did, when he wasn't this 'Hawk' character."
"That's fair... What are you going to do about it though?"
"I dunno, avoid him 'till I die?" You couldn't tell if you were joking.
"C'mon, I think you should text him! You guys were super close, you shouldn't give up so fast. Just be blunt, like, 'hey I don't know what happened between us, but I miss you. Y'know?" She said, pausing for a second. "I could text him for you."
"What? No way, he would kill you and me."
She shrugged. "I still think you should say something."
She was definitely right, and you hated that. After she gushed about Miguel, you said your goodbyes and hung up.
The next day at school was extremely boring. It dragged on for an impossibly long time. And to make it worse, Hawk was extra obnoxious today. He kept making comments in class about his new tattoo, and how he's been training nonstop. Not that you were listening...
The day dragged on up until lunch. Unfortunately, Hawk was also in there the same period as you. He still sat with Miguel and Demitri, so at least that didn't change about him. But it also upset you even more because you had no clue why he only cut you off.
"So, you gonna do it?" Samantha said between taking a couple bites of her lunch.
"Do what?" You asked.
"Talk to Eli!"
"Absolutely not!" You whispered, so surrounding tables didn't hear.
"Hm. Okay." She looked down at her phone and frowned. "Hey, do you mind if I borrow your phone? Mine's dead, and I gotta text my dad."
"Sure." You slid your phone to her.
You watched her pick it up so you couldn't see the screen. After a couple minutes she smiled, and handed your phone back.
"What was that about?" You asked, noticing Hawk give you an odd look. "Oh God, Eli's looking at me." You pretended not to notice.
"Oh yeah, about that..." Sam looked up at you. "My phone isn't actually dead. I texted Hawk for you... I forgot he had lunch with us."
Your face instantly heated up, even more so when you noticed Hawk still looking at you.
"Are you fucking kidding?" You asked, quickly unlocking your phone. You found his chat, and reluctantly opened it.
Me: Hey, I know it's been a while, but I miss talking to you. What happened?
"I'm dead. I'm dead, and I'm going to kill you." You said as Samantha giggled. "This isn't funny! Oh my God... He's typing."
Eli: I have detention later, are u gonna be here after school? I'd rather talk in person.
"He's asking if I'm staying after school! He wants to talk in person- Samantha what did you do?!"
"In person?" Her eyes grew wide. "Ooh, this is serious."
You groaned, nervously writing back:
"Yeah, I'll be here."
Eli: Ok. Meet me in the library, 3:30. its when detention ends for me.
Me: sounds good.
"I am one-hundred percent going to die today."
Your stomach started to hurt. What were you going to say to him? And, what was he going to say to you? What was so important that he needed to tell you in person? So many things were running through your head you couldn't focus. The rest of classes went by just as slow, but every hour meant it was closer to confrontation...
The clock struck 2:30, meaning it was time to leave. You said your goodbyes to Samantha, (as she so lovingly said, "good luck, don't throw up on him.") The mere comment made you queasy. You made your way to your art class, needing to finish up on some work. Good thing he asked me to stay after, or else I would have forgotten about my project. You thought to yourself, getting your supplies out.
It was almost 3:30 now. The school was so quiet after hours. Only the quiet chitchatting of people in the offices, and the occasional heel click of anyone still in the halls. You went into the library, hoping he wasn't already there. He wasn't there when you looked around, giving you a sense of relief. Then, your phone buzzed.
Eli: I see u. Turn around.
Fuck. You turned, seeing him in the back, in a closed off room for the computers.
He looked at you as you walked in, no sense of nervousness at all. It was almost funny to see him so calm. It was unlike him to not be a wreck about things. Not that it was a good thing, if he was happier now then that's all that mattered.
"I know you didn't actually send that text," He started. You were about to open your mouth and apologize, but he continued. "But I also know it isn't a lie, either."
"I'm sorry." You said. "I shouldn't have let her send that. I didn't even know until she gave me my phone back. But what happened? We used to be so close... I know I'm not one of your karate friends, but... I don't know, it seems unfair to me."
"Karate friends?" He shook his head. "That's bullshit. I would never drop you because of that."
"You've spoken to me like, twice since you joined"
He looked away and sighed. "That's because I was finally starting to talk to people and do my own thing or whatever. I wasn't some dork anymore."
"Why would that change anything?"
"Well..."
You waited, looking at him and fumbling with your shirt sleeve to distract yourself.
"I always liked you... Even now." He wouldn't look at you, staring at the floor instead. "I was afraid you wouldn't like how I changed, so I stopped talking to you before you could stop talking to me."
As the words came out of his mouth, you saw him turn red. He never looked this flustered. You couldn't tell if he was messing with you or not, but the look on his face proved he was serious.
"You're probably gonna rip on me now."
"No of course not, Eli. I liked you too. You were my best friend, and I was head over heels with you."
"You were?" He looked up at you.
"Are."
He paused. "I really fucked up, Y/n. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay... Really. But can we still be friends?"
"Of course."
He stood up and you hugged him. He felt so different, but when you hugged him it was just like it used to be. He was still warm, and he still held you like he needed it.
You felt him kiss the top of your head before you pulled away.
"So..." A shitfaced grin on his face. "What's this about you still liking me?"
"Oh my god, you nerd." You giggled. "You said it too."
"Well," He put his hands around your waist and brought you close. "Maybe we can go back to being friends, or more than friends?"
He bent down and kissed you. You were shocked, but apparently the new Hawk was confident in other ways too. You kissed him back like you were longing for this- and you definitely were. He was so gentle and soft with you, and you couldn't help but want more.
"Well?" He asked.
You didn't answer. You just reached up and kissed him again, wrapping your arms around his neck.
"Hm," You pulled away. "What do you think?"
