I heard a knock on the door while I was writing my book and looked up. “Yes?” The door opened and it was Kevin with a bag from Walmart. “Hey Madison, I got you something. When I saw it, it just reminded me of you sweetie.” He said handing me the bag. I looked at him with an odd look and took the bag from him. He smiled at me and sat on my bed watching me as I opened the bag. I couldn’t help but put a big smile on my face. “Oh my…” was all I could say. He got me a pair of earrings that were dream catchers. They were so beautiful and multicolored.
I stood up and gave me a quick hug and walked to my mirror to put them on. “I’m glad you like them hun. Dinner will be ready in ten minutes.” As he walked out the door and shut my door I glanced back at my mirror and looked at how pretty they were. They were dangles but they didn’t dangle too much to where they were heavy on my ears. Kevin was all around a good guy. My real dad though, Bradley, he was never a real father. Was never there for me, never supported me in anything, always tried to get me out there in the world and whenever I refused he’d throw a fit.
I went downstairs and sat the table with my book. I would always read a book during dinner while all of my family would talk amongst each other. “So, Ashely totally liked Ross, but she won’t admit it! Even though…” and she just goes on and on and on. While they all talk and joke around, I just sit there, eating my chicken n dumplings while reading my book. I never really like talking. At all, but I had no choice when Kevin asks, “So how are your grades Madison?”
I looked up from my book and just shrugged. “Decent.”
My mom shook her head and shoved chicken in her mouth. Everyone has just learned to not try to make conversation with me because it was useless. I would just answer them with shrugs or simple facial expressions. So they just decided it wasn’t worth trying to start conversation. Kate always loved starting conversations. She could talk about anything and everything under the sun because that was just who she is. I don’t know how it was even possible that me and her were related, let alone twins. We are nothing alike at all.
Momma calls me one of a kind. Kate calls me weird. Kevin calls me different. My dad doesn’t think I belong.
“Madison honey, can we talk to you about something?” Kevin asked, snapping me out of my daze. I looked at him and raised my eyebrows. “Since you’re graduation, we would like to know what you’re planning on doing for college.”
I licked my lips and looked down. I never really have thought of what I was going to do after high-school, so I just shrugged my shoulders. Kevin just looked at me and shook his head and continued eating. “I don’t know why you guys keep trying to talk to her. It’s not like she’s going to talk back anytime soon.” Kate said scooping up herself some more chicken n dumplings soup.
“Katelyn Rose, that was very rude to say.” Mom said. “Apologize.”
“Why? It’s not like she says anything. It’s so true. Why do I get in trouble for telling the truth and then she never gets in trouble for not talking when she’s supposed to?” Kate complained.
My mom shook her head and sighed. “I think dinner is done.” And got up and walked away from the table. Kevin left too and just left it to me and Kate who gave me a dirty look. “You know what, maybe if you said something once in a while, people might actually like you,” and stormed off taking her bowl of chicken n dumplings with.
I just sat there and put in headphones, tuning out the world.
Just like I always do.
