Character: Always late, Determined.

Plot: Police investigation, last chance

'I've always been too late' this was my first thought as I heard what the woman in front of me said. I stood still completely shocked as she walked away. I was too late, again.

This started about 2 months ago. I came to work about 5 minutes late. "Well, at least it's not an hour like last time" my brother said, teasing me with a smile. I work at a cafe, my sister-in-law's cafe in fact. So I guess technically that means my brother is my boss. This job doesn't have the best paycheck in the world but all my other jobs couldn't stand how late I always was.

"You got a phone call today," my brother said, his voice dripping with interest "You really need to get a new phone,"

"Do you seriously think I don't know that," I asked, annoyance showing through my tone.

My phone was dropped in the toilet by my niece while I was babysitting her.

I walked to the office completely unaware of what I was walking into by calling that number. I looked at the number on the notepad displaying all the missed calls. I dialed the number as I wondered why someone that I didn't recognize was calling me.

"Hello, I was called by this number earlier."

"Name, please," an overly perky voice said, the sound of papers rustling in the background signaling that she was looking through files.

"Dave," I coughed "John Dave"

"We've been trying to contact you for a while now."

"My phone has been broken"

"It's alright," She said hinting that she didn't really care. "Your friend Olivia has been convicted of murder"
