Chapter 3: Rule (Fallon's POV)
He stared down at me with a quizzical look on his face.
I didn't mean to come off as such a snippy person on my first day here but his remark in the cafeteria had ticked me off.
"Okay," he said slowly, resting one arm on the shelf. "Maybe they won't eat you alive after all."
I rolled my eyes, glancing down at the book in my hand. He did find it first, to be fair. I held it out for him to take. "Take it. You found it first."
"Pity?" He clicked his tongue before shaking his head. "I hate being pitied."
My brows furrowed. "It's not pity, it's... common sense. Finder keepers."
He took it, smirking at me. "And losers weepers, right?"
I faked a sniffle before nodding and then thrusting the book at his chest.
He took it, giving me an unamused look. "Like you said, you don't know the librarian and I do. So just keep it. All right, newbie?"
I eyed the book, then him. If he wants to make it so easy for me, sure, why not? I took it with a shrug. "Thanks."
He looked me up and down one more time and then turned around, walking away.
I stared at the spot where he stood just a minute ago before turning around and walking to the front desk. The librarian wasn't here but I knew how the library book-issuing process worked, so I issued the books myself, scanning my student ID for each book and then left, going back into my room. I had unpacked most of my clothes, so I finished whatever was left and then started going through some of the study material that was given to me to help me catch up on the summer work that the students of Darkmond had to do.
I spent the rest of the day catching up on the majority of my subjects and then thought I should take a shower and freshen up. Unlike New York, the bathrooms at Darkmond aren't shared. Every student has their own private bathroom within the dorm room with a shower too. So, I grabbed a black, full-sleeve crop top with a pair of pink sweatpants because I couldn't care less what people around here wear. I showered, changed and set my room up a bit to my liking.
I walked to the window, pushing it open and taking a look around. I pushed the desk aside so it was now sitting in front of the blank wall. I should buy some cushions and a small rug and make this a small reading corner. That went as a reminder on my phone before I leaned out of the window, resting my arms on the window frame.
I stuck my head out, looking left and right. I looked down, staring at the main water fountain that had another statue, following the style and structure of Greek mythology rather than Christianity. If I'm reading the statue right, that's meant to be Zeus.
All of a sudden, I heard wings flapping. I looked up as a group of bats circled the building's peak. They circled it a few times before they spread out and flew in different directions. I went back to staring and trying to memorize campus as best as I could until a bat flew past me, startling me. I moved back into my room, quickly moving to close the window so I wouldn't let it inside. The lock clicked shut as the bat came and sat at my windowsill, peering at me.
