Chapter 4: Playing Dress up

When Red and Zeke reached the front door of Granny's cottage Red pulls her phone from her pocket to text Momma.
"Hi mom, I hope you are having a good day at work. I wanted to let you know I am playing dress up at Granny's."
"What's the matter Red? We really should get inside before someone sees me." Says Zeke
"Oh Zeke I am sorry," Red says opening the door. "I didn't think about keeping you outside I just knew I had to text Momma and let her know I was here. I don't get service inside the house so I knew I needed to text her." Explains Red walking straight to the closet door.
"Umm, Red? I thought you said she has kept most of her clothes over the years, and this doesn't look like a door that could hold one person's clothes for a lifetime." Zeke says.
"Oh Zeke hasn't anyone ever told you to not judge a book by it's cover? My Papa was and amazing craftsman. He utilized ever space he could in this house to make Granny feel like it was bigger than it was." Red explained opening the closet door. Red walks in and turns on the closet light. Zeke follows her in and his mouth drops open with surprise.
"Oh my Red! This closet is huge!" Zeke says.
"See I told you!" Buzz buzz buzz Red's phone starts vibrating."hold on Zeke, I have to answer this it's Momma." Red says pulling her phone from her pocket. "Hello Momma. Hold on I can't hear let me step outside." Red looks at Zeke and mouths I'm sorry to Zeke and walks out side. "Ok Momma, I'm outside I should be able to hear you now."
" Hey baby, I just wanted to tell you to have fun at Granny's. I'm going to be late getting home, I just had a nurse call in for next shift. So that means I have to stay until we can find coverage." Grace says.
"Oh ok Mom, if you don't make it home in time for dinner I will leave you a plate in the microwave." Says Red.m
"Actually kiddo, that's the other reason for my call. I am not sure how late I'm going to be and I hate for you to be home alone at night. I need you to ask Granny if you can stay for dinner and I will pick you up when I get off but it might not be till morning." Momma instructs.
"Ok Momma, I will head to the garden and ask her. Then I will text you and let you know what she said." Says Red.
"Ok baby, thank you. I'm sorry I'm going to miss dinner with you. Oh I gotta go babe a new patient is coming in. I love you! " Says Momma.
Red barely got "I love you too!" Out of her mouth before Momma hung up. Red turns around and goes back into the closet. "Hey Zeke, I'm sorry but I have to run out back and ask Granny a quick question. I'll only be gone a few more minutes." Red explains.
"Ok Red I will be right here exploring this closet." Zeke replies.
"Ok." Red giggles as she heads for the garden.
As Red approaches Granny she says, " Hey Granny, Momma wanted me to ask if I could stay here until she get off work?"
"Well of course Red, you know you are always welcome here. Is everything ok at the hospital?" Granny asks.
"Yeah I guess mom had to get off the line pretty quick because another patient was coming in, but she said a nurse called in. So she has to cover it until they can find someone else. So she isn't sure when she will get off work. She said it might not be until morning." Red explains.
"Ok Red, no problem." Granny says with a reassuring smile.
Red grabs her phone back out of her pocket to text Momma."Granny said it's ok that I stay until you get off work."
As Red slips her phone back into her pocket buzz buzz her phone starts to vibrate.
Momma already texted her back "Ok baby, please tell Granny thank you. I love you both."
Red slips her phone back into her pocket, "She said thank you Granny. But I'm going to head back in and play with Zeke." Red says turning and headed for the door.
When Red rounds the door of the closet she bust out in a hysterical laughter. "Oh my Granny what big ears you have." Red says barely able to contain her laughter.
"All the better to hear you with darling." Zeke says playing along. His wolf like ears poking out of the sides of a shower cap and wig that he had found in the back of the closet.
"Well Zeke there is one thing for sure, Red says with a giggle. "You make an adorable Granny." She laughs pulling a big floppy sun hat down from the top of the rack.
"You better believe it!" Zeke says with a giggle.
"Hey this hat gives me an idea for an outfit." Red says moving to the other side of the closet to find a red rockabilly dress.
"Hey Red," Zeke shouts so Red can hear him. "Whats this rack back here with just men's clothes?"
"Oh that was Papa's section of the closet. You can wear something from back there if you'd like." Red shouts back changing her clothes.
"Oh awesome!" Zeke shouts back pulling out a pair of blue jeans, a white tee shirt, and a black leather jacket to change into.
Just as Zeke finishes pulling on the leather jacket, Red shouts "Are you decent over there."
"Yup!" Zeke says and Red rounds the rack.
"Well, what do you think?" Zeke asked.
" That looks really nice on you. Come on we should go show Granny." Red says grabbing Zeke's hand, and pulling him behind her headed straight for the garden where she last talked to Granny.
The door opening catches Granny's attention. She can't help but smile as Zeke and Red come out the back door. Granny quickly grabs her phone out of her apron pocket and rushes over to the back deck.
"Wait right there!" Granny says, "let me take some pictures, you too are just too cute to not capture this moment. These are the memories that keep my soul young. You two are like a blast from the past."
"Oh man." Zeke says looking at his watch "Mother is going to murder me if I'm late for dinner again. I really should go change and head home. Thank you so much for allowing me to join your picnic today." Zeke says giving Granny a hug.
"Oh my look at that." Says Red look at the clock on her phone. "I'm so sorry we lost track of time." Says Red.
"Oh no Red don't be sorry." Zeke says with a smile.
"Well let's go change so you can head home, I don't want you getting into trouble because of me." Red says leading the way back to the closet.
Granny shouts, "Nice to meet you Zeke!"
"Nice to meet you too Granny, we will have to do this again." Zeke says being pulled through the door by Red.
After they change back into their own clothes they meet back in the doorway of the closet.
"Thank you for today!" Red says as they walk to the door.
"No Red! Thank you for today. Would you like to hang out with me in the woods tomorrow if you're allowed?" Zeke asked.
"Oh yes that sounds delightful. I can walk you back to the woods, if you would like." Offers Red.
"Oh no Red, it's getting dark you should stay here." Zeke says.
"Oh, Ok." Res says dropping her head in disappointment.
"Don't be sad, Red." Zeke says pulling her in for a big hug.
"It's just that, this has been the best day of my life. I'm just not ready for it to be over yet." Red says into Zeke's chest.
Rubbing Red's back Zeke says "Please don't be sad, we can pick right back up tomorrow where we are leaving today! I promise." Zeke said.
Loosening his grip on Red Zeke says, "I really do need to go, or we won't be able to hang out tomorrow."
"Ok well how about 11 tomorrow?" Red asked.
"At the hollow tree?" Zeke confirms.
"Be careful on your way home. Watch out for any strange girls that might want to take you home." Red jokes as Zeke walks through the door.
"Yeah and you watch out for wolfs, they are dangerous ya know!" Zeke plays along, walking down the steps. "I will see you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow." Red sighs closing the door.
