In which Jay is in a toxic relationship with Kai but doesn't realize it until Cole does.

NOTE: This is set in an AU where they are not ninja, they are just living normal lives in Ninjago city.

A sigh leaves Cole's mouth as he listens to the muffled yells from his two friend who are currently hiding in the basement, trying to disguise their argument. Though, he can still hear every insult and reprimands being spat from Kai's hot tongue and the small, contained sniffles coming from Jay.

This wasn't anything new to him, or his other friend's who sat beside them. They all tried to ignore it, for there was nothing they could do. Jay wouldn't let them; insisting that he was fine. Insisting that he was in a loving relationship when he clearly was not. Correction: maybe it used to be a loving relationship, but that existed no more.

"Does it feel stuffy in here to you guys?" Lloyd's nasally voice finally peaked up, a hand tugging on his sweatshirt.

Nya nodded while Zane stood. "Indeed. Perhaps we should enjoy some fresh air outside?" He suggested, already walking to the sliding glass door.

"Yeah, plus, it seems like they need some privacy." Nya added, joining the others. "You coming, Cole?"

The ravenet furrowed his brows and shook his head. "I'll stay here."

"Suit yourself." They shrugged, quickly closing the door as the others yelling and crying only got louder and louder.

Cole scowled as he continued eavesdropping. He couldn't stand the way Kai treated his best friend. Ever since they got together two years ago, he's never been the same. His extraverted, loud and silly personality seemed to vanish the moment Kai got his greedy hands on him. It's like he controlled his every thought, and Jay allowed it.

Of course, Cole has tried speaking about it to Jay. About how he doesn't think he's being treated right, and how he could do so much better. Yet every time he is shut down by Jay.

He should've known that someone with as big of a heart as Jay's would certainly get taken advantage of. And he wasn't there to protect him...

Cole tried minding his own business until he finally saw Kai angrily walk up the stairs, right past him and to the patio where the rest of their friends came the comfort him. The other scoffed. What does he need comforting for?

Hearing the soft sobs of his friend, the boy rushed down to the dark basement where Jay sat in the corner hunched over, his shoulders shaking.

"Jay..?" Cole spoke softly, knowing that loud or rough tones scared him. He slowly flicked on the light, revealing the other's bright red face and tear stained cheeks. His beautiful blue eyes were covered by a purple bruise.

"No! T-turn it off please...I don't want you to see me like this."

Although he was fuming, the boy turned off the light and made his way over to his friend, reaching out for his face. "What happened baby?" He couldn't help the pet name that fell from his lips. It only felt natural. Normally he would opt for a more playful name, like blue face, but he knew now was not the time.

Surprisingly, Jay leaned into the others warm touch. Another tear fell. He was so used to violent hands, all he needed was a sturdy chest to hide in.

As if reading his mind, Cole opened his arms as an invitation in which Jay greedily accepted. They fit together perfectly, Jay's head fitting just right into the crook of the raven's neck. Taking a deep breath, the brunette was finally able to breath, feeling comforted by the pattern of Cole's chest.

Rubbing the back of his neck, Cole whispered, "You don't have to tell me what happened yet. Just know I'm here for you."

Jay hiccuped. "I think...I think I made a mistake."

"We all make mistakes, all that matters is if we fix them." Cole lifted Jay's chin up, finally allowing him to stare into his familiar orbs. Even in the dark, he could still count each of his freckles. Pausing, he sucked in a breath as he took in their proximity. Jay's puffy lips were only a centimeter from his, their noses touching. Cole relished in the feeling of his best friend's body in his arms: warm and small. Something he needed to cherish. To protect.

Jay placed a gentle hand over the other's strong jawline, caressing his cheekbones in the process. He drew small circles over his cheeks, bold enough to hover over his lips before blinking and shuffling away. Immediately, he missed the warmth but only one thought hovered over his mind: what would Kai do if he saw this?

With an awkward cough, Jay forced a smile through his tears. "Thanks for being there for me Cole. You're the only support I have."

Cole nodded. Right. Support...
