In which Kai protects Jay from bullies. High school AU. *Note: some things that are facts in the show are not here. I changed some things for the sake of the plot*

Most people hate school with a burning passion. Kai doesn't really fit into that. He actually likes school. It's the only place where he can be himself and spend time with his friends. At his home, he has to work with his father who hounds down on him all the time for not being focused enough.

But how can he be focused when Jay Walker is constantly on his mind?

The first time he saw him was two weeks ago. He's new to the school, and walked into the class with a large smile on it face. It was beautiful and could light up the whole classroom. His small freckles and electric blue eyes enamored Kai.

Jay was told to sit right next to Kai. Of course. His heart heated up along with his cheeks as soon as the boy sat next to him, the scent of vanilla and cedar wood filling his nose.

"Hi. I'm Jay," He tilted his head cutely to try and catch his eyes.

Kai stumbled, "U-Uh, yeah, I'm Kai." He tried to give his signature smirk but it turned out to be a hesitant smile instead. Jay chuckled before turning around and paying attention to the class.

That same day, after class ended, Kai watched Jay walk out of the classroom happily. He waved to other students. His aura was just naturally playful and friendly. It was honestly really attractive. Kai liked that he didn't have to try so hard. As he watched the boy walk out of the door, he also watched some taller boy push right past him and hit the back of his head. Kai gasped as he watched Jay stumble.

"No one wants you in the school, loser!" The one who hit him called from afar, his friends snickering beside him.

This was the first time he's seen Jay with a frown on his face the entire day, sadness emitting from his blue orbs. He walked away with his shoulders sunken. Kai's heart ached for him, and a part of him felt like a magnet, wanting to run after the boy and comfort him. Tell him that those things weren't true. But he couldn't. He couldn't risk his reputation for a boy he just met.

Kai has established himself in this school as a confident player. Every girl is at his side, begging for his attention when they don't even know that he plays for the other team. A part of him likes it; it's sort of a power move. Another part of him hates it, finding it annoying.

"Hey, you ready?" Lloyd calls, the others behind him.

Kai nods his head. "Yeah." He grabs his bag and follows the others to the cafeteria to get lunch. This had to be his favorite part about school; just getting to hang out and talk with his friends. At home, his father would never let him out enough to actually hang out with his friends.

As they talked and laughed, Kai's eyes slipped to the side and he noticed a certain boy sitting at a table all alone. It was Jay. He didn't even had a lunch. Instead, he sat there tracing the small designs on the table, looking solemnly at the others who were having fun. For a second, the two made eye contact and Kai's breath got stuck in his throat until the other looked away.

I wish I could help....

Two weeks have passed by since Jay entered their school and nothing has changed. People continue to bully him about everything they could. The junkyard, his freckles, his hair, etc. It only got worse and so did Jay's sadness.

Kai couldn't stand it. He felt a connection with the boy and wanted to help him some how or some way but he just couldn't. He was a coward. If he stood up to the bullies, he'd probably be outcasted as well no matter how much he fought.

"Anyway, I was in the city right? I saw they opened up a dessert and boba tea shop!" Cole's voice sliced through his thoughts, and excited smile adorned his face as he thought about his favorite deserts.

"Boba tea?" Nya asked skeptically.

Cole's eyes widened. "You're telling me you've never tried it?" He asked, bewildered.

"I've never tried it either." Kai piped in.

The others followed shortly with 'me either' and 'yeah never.'

Cole face palmed. "Well, we're trying it next time we go."

In the background, Kai could make out a few voices. One seemed worried and scared while the other was deep and loud, pushing fear into the other. Kai furrowed his brows and turned around, looking at the table that Jay normally sits alone at. There, he was being pushed into the corner by some blonde jock, who was laughing and taunting at his misery.

"Why? I never do anything to you!" Jay cried out as the other pushed his head into the wall.

The jock shrugged, not bothering to really give any sort of explanation. He grabbed Jay's arms and twisted them, a painful cry leaving the boy's lips as he closed his eyes in pain. "Come on, you're stronger than that, right?" The jock teased. He grabbed the boy's hair and yanked on it before throwing a punch to his face.

It was so sudden that Kai gasped and suddenly stood up. His friends stared at him blankly, surprised but he couldn't help himself. He marched over to the table without a second thought and grabbed the jocks shoulder. "Leave him alone." He seethed, staring menacingly at him.

The jock smirked, stifling a laugh. "And what're you gonna do, Mr. Player?" He asked.

Kai stiffened. He wasn't sure he was even capable of fighting this guy. Sure, Kai was buff and had muscle, but there was a large difference in weight. He couldn't control that. He nearly backed off until he heard Jay's sniffle from behind him and turned around. The boy looked up at him innocently, his blue eyes clouded with tears as he practically begged him to help. I can't leave him....

Turning back around, Kai threw the first punch. He gasped, surprised at his sudden outburst. The jock groaned, clutching his face before glaring. "That's it!" He stood up, tackling Kai and taking him to the ground. Kai could barely breath under his weight, but he managed to throw a couple punches and kicks before his body was slowly numbing.

Suddenly, the jock was thrown off him.

"Nobody messes with our friend!" He heard Zane call and watched as the others took the jock down until he surrendered and scurried off.

Jay was the first one to get to him. He kneeled down and held his bruised face. "My God, are you okay?" He asked worriedly. His nose scrunched cutely as he scanned all over the boy for any other wounds.

"Am I? Are you?" He asked. "He's been bullying you for weeks."

Jay pushed a longer strand of his hair behind his ear shyly. "Yeah...Thanks for finally helping." He said. He was grateful someone finally put an end to his taunting.

Cupping one side of his face, Kai rubbed circles in the boys soft cheek boldly. Jay's eyes widened, and his cheeks blushed but he allowed the touch. He hasn't received affection in forever, and it felt so much better than a punch to the face. Kai's hand was so comforting and warm he nearly purred.

"I'm sorry. I shoudlve helped you sooner." Kai said.

"You did now and that's all that matters." Jay smiled before helping the other up.

Kai scratched his neck nervously. "Do you..um...want to sit with my friends and I?" He asked.

Jay's eyes lit up and he nodded his head. Kai led him to the table where his friends sat back down. They greeted him with open arms, immediately asking questions and getting along great. They laughed and giggled. It seemed like Jay finally completed the missing puzzle piece in their group.

And maybe, just maybe he completed the puzzle in Kai's heart.
