Y/n's Pov

It's a family business.

It was revealed to me at the age of 15 that I had to work as a 'Pink Soldier' for this game called 'Squid Game'. Back then, I thought that it was kinda weird why they called it a 'Pink Soldier'. But it all makes sense now.

They kill people. No mercy. No remorse. In the words of my grandfather "Kill, or get Killed."

I never met my grandfather face to face though, he always had this golden mask of an animal. It confused me when I was younger. But it all makes sense now, he wouldn't want people to know our true identity. Now that I think about it, I don't think I have ever seen my family's faces before.

The last time I saw someone's face was when I was near the border where it divided the North from the South. I was always told that the North was a bad place for a kid. I was 13 at the time, I didn't have to wear a mask yet or did I have to be secluded away from society. I vaguely remember seeing a girl around my age. She was beautiful. I wonder where she is now... maybe living the life in Jeju Island.

Flashback

I was playing tag with my friends from school. Thinking that it'll be a good thing to do, I ran from Daeseong-dong all the way to the border. It's something crazy, but I somehow was able to do it. It was considerably very close to the border so it wasn't something that hard to do.

I saw guards protecting the place. I sneaked by and saw a family of three. A mom and her daugher and son. Her daughter looked my age, but she was crying.

"I miss dad. Why did they have to shoot him. We just wanted to get out of the North." The little girl cried out, the mom then took her in her arms, hugging her tightly.

"Mommy I want to go to the toilet." The little boy said, he looked like he was just five years old.

"Ok, let's go to the toilet, Cheol. Sae please stay here ok." The mother told her two kids. As they walked away, the girl started crying even harder.

"Psst! Over here!" I called out to the girl, my voice cracking a little bit.

"Oh... uhm... Hi." The girl gave me a small and forced smile.

"You ok?" I asked her, feeling sorry for the girl.

"No not really, my dad. H-he just got shot trying to cross the border..." She told me, choking a little due to crying.

"Here. So that you can wipe away your tears" I handed her my 'My Little Pony' handkerchief through the fence.

"'My Little Pony'?" She giggled a little.

"What? It's a good show ok! It shows that friendship is magic!" I explained myself defensively.

"So why did you and your family want to cross the border?" I asked meticulously, scared that the question might trigger the girl and make her cry even more.

"We thought that it's better here. You know, without the dictatorship and a little more freedom. But there's only one place I would want to live in..." She said looking down while wiping her tears with the handkerchief.

"And where's that?" I asked

"Jeju Island." She softly smiled.

"Hey... when you guys finally get settled here in the South, maybe we can all have dinner together. So that my family can meet yours!" I told her enthusiastically.

"Yea sure let's do that! But I'm scared that the people of the South would hurt us and belittle us because we're from the North." She said, pouting slightly.

"Don't worry, I'll promise you that I'll protect you no matter what." I smiled at her, putting my hand in the hole of the fence so that we can shake hands. She took her hand in mine and shook it, that's when we heard someone call her name.

"Sae! Where are you? Come here!" Her mother called out, holding her son's hands.

"Ok I have to go." She quickly said

"Wait. What's your name?" I asked her.

"Kang Sae-byeok. What about you?"

"Oh Y/n."

Back to present time

Now, I'm 18. That was five years ago. I hope that she's ok now. Maybe one day I'll meet her in Jeju Island. But until then, I would have to work as a 'Pink Soldier'.

Kang Sae-byeok... what a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.
