I'm in the broom closet right now, hiding from Mom. She has those green eyes again. She came to my room looking for me but I hid in here. She was muttering things about my fate again but I escaped from her hold as she tried to shake my shoulders and ran out.
While I'm in here, let me tell you something about myself because after all, we haven't been introduced. I'm Luke and I am the nine year old with the worst luck on this planet. I have a half crazy mother and no friends. I do poorly at school because of my dyslexia and ADHD. My mother says that I'm the son of the messenger god Hermes but I don't believe her. I can't see a god falling for her. She keeps nattering about a job she had been offered and how she failed at it. She might love me, I'm not sure about that but she definitely doesn't show affection at all.
Coming back to the broom closet, it's dark in here. I've opened the door just a crack so that I can look out for her but the light is enough for me to look at my reflection in the mirror. My blond hair is messy and wierd and my face has kind of elfish features. In my eyes I can see a strange emotion...fear.
Suddenly the door opened and I saw Mom looking inside. Oh no! The green eyes haven't gone yet.
"NO!"she cried," Not Luke! Not my son's fate! "
She grabbed my shoulders and began to shake them. Her grip was like steel and she spoke in a reptilian voice.
"Don't let him do this, Hermes! Help him!"she screamed and passed out.
"Mom!"I yelled,"Are you alright? "
She opened her eyes and they were the normal brown again.
"Huh? What? Luke, why are we in the broom closet, dear I burnt the cookies!"she said looking surprised. I felt worried about her but also scared about myself. She went back to the kitchen and began to hum a tune.
I decided to go out for some fresh air. I took a cricket bat with me. I don't know why but something told me that I needed it. I went out and sat on the swing , thinking about my problems when a wierd hissing noise came from behind a bush.
"Here he isss!" a voice hissed, "How long have we worked to find you, demigod!"
The person or rather, the thing speaking came out. She had almost normal looks except for her lower body. Instead of legs, she had two snake trunk like objects to help her move.
"W-Who are you?"I heard myself speaking.
"I am a dracanae and today I will feast on your blood! Fight for your life or die!" she said.
The dracanae took out a sword. The blade was gleaming in the dark. I guess she didn't expect much fighting skill from me because I put up a tough fight while she just looked surprised. Her surprise was well justified because I myself didn't know how I was staying alive. Finally I landed a blow in the right place and she turned into a pile of dust. All that was left of her was a sword. I picked it up and ran back into the house to my room.
"Dinner is ready, dear,"my Mom called. I said I wasn't hungry and lay down on the bed. I thought about Mom. She made my life difficult but she didn't do it knowingly. If there was another attack, I couldn't let her be harmed. What had the dracanae called me... A demigod. I don't know what that meant but I have a feeling that it isn't going to be good. With these thoughts in my mind I fell asleep.
My dreams were scary and disturbed. I saw a girl with spiky black hair. There was a place with a centaur and I saw monsters. A lot of monsters , most of which wanted my blood. I woke up drenched in sweat. All I knew was that it wasn't safe for me here. I had to leave. Mom gave me breakfast. After eating I went straight to my room. I grabbed a backpack and stuffed whatever I could find in it. All I had was a packet of snickers bars, a bit of pocketmoney and some junk food. I took some bread from the dining table and the sword the dracanae had left. With these supplies, I ran out. Just as I reached the front door, Mom called out,"Luke! Where are you going?"
"I'll be back in time for lunch Mom,"I said trying to stop my tears. I ran out but as I was leaving I picked up a monster stuffed toy as a reminder of Mom. Then I ran till I could run no more. I had no clear idea where I was going. My only thought was 'away'.
