Chapter 11: The troll of eternal bad breath goes to a sweet baby sleep

Luke's POV

Thalia explained the plan to me. It was simple, yet, it could be affective. When she was finished, I noticed something different about her. I mean, I know I only met her about forty-eight hours ago, but I could understand her emotions just by looking at her face. I guess it's a demigod thing. She looked disturbed and sort of confused.

"Thalia, is something wrong?" I asked.

She studied me for a moment, as though wondering if she could trust me. Then, I guess the verdict was in my favour because she took a deep breath and continued.

"Luke, I was thinking of something Getleon said to me," she said."He asked me if the gods ever helped us, ever did anything for us? I mean, they never even bothered to contact us. Why should we do something for them? They're asking us to put our lives in danger to deliver some stupid cow to a place. Is it worth a risk?"

Tammi walked over to us.

"Thalia, I understand how you feel about this," she said."But Apollo asked you to deliver the cow for reason."

"Gee, what reason can that be?" Thalia said, in her most sarcastic voice."probably he thought- Oh dear, I think I should just lie on a hammock and relax while these two demigods do all the work and I relax."

"Thalia, haven't you sensed it?" Tammi asked.

I could tell she was driving Thalia nuts with these feeble hints.

"Sensed what, exactly?"

"The sun is weaker, meaning that Apollo's sun chariot is not up to it's strength. Do you have any idea how serious things can get?" Tammi paused for a breath."If Apollo's power does not get back to him, there is a slight chance that the sun chariot will break down alltogethor. Without the chariot, Apollo is powerless and can you imagine the earth without tthe sun?"

"You mean, in ten days, the sun will dissapear? One morning, you just wake up and realise Oh I think the sun is destroyed, what am I gonna do now?" Thalia asked.

"Not all of a sudden," Tammi said."The power of the sun has been getting weake for days. Haven't you seen the sky?"

"Last question- Apollo told us that Zeus imprisoned his powers within the cattle. Why would Zeus do that if this was the result?" i asked.

"The Lord of the Sky can get paranoid," Tammi said, glancig at Thalia."He might have cast the enchantment to bound the sun god's powers when he was in anger. by the time he realised how strong his spell had become, it was too late. He couldn't reverse it, so, demigods were needed."

"Trust the gods to leave all the dirty work to us," Thalia muttered under her breath.

"Let's leave that topic aside," I said."For now, I think we should focus on escaping while Remlin needs regenerating."

"When I begin chanting the spell, you will have to focus away from the words," Tammi warned."Don't dwell on what I say, during the spell, or you mightt fall asleep along ith the troll. When Gregory falls asleep, you'll have approximately ten minutes to open the door on the far side of the wall before he wakes up again. I'll not be able to help you with that. Then, we get out of the castle and distance ourselves from it as much as possible."

"Hold on for a sec," I said."What about the scroll Apollo gave us? It might contain something important."

"It won't be possible to escape along with  retrieving the scroll. Whatever it contains, we'll have to go  on without it," Tammi said.

I knew she was right.

"Alright, I'm starting," Tammi announced."Stay near the window. As soon as he falls asleep, rush out. I'll follow you."

With that she began chanting in some language that wasn't English. She sang soflty, like lulling a panicked animal to sleep. I could see her affecting Greg. The troll let out a huge yawn. Sadly, he was standing near the window and I had to smell his breath. Imagine standing near the largest imaginable pile of cow manure. Multiply the smell by a hundred and fifty. Then, you'll be somewhere close to what I experienced.

Anyways, as Tammi continued, I felt my own eyelids getting heavier.I remembered what she had said about not concentratingonher voice and I fllowed the instructions.

"Luke,come on," Thalia whispred urgently.

I saw that Gregory was curled up inthe middleof the garden. I climbed out of the window and jumped outside. I somehow landed onmy feet. Thalia wasn't so lucky. She fell on her back and groaned. I helped her up.Tammi continued her song.

We went towards the door at the end of the garden. We went up a wide circle around the troll. On finally reching our destination, the door seemed huge.

"How do we open it?" Thalia asked.

I had a pretty good idea, but it would work only if Icould place my hand on the lock. And the lock was five feet above my reach. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tammiclimb out of the window. Her singing had stopped and the garden was eerily silent.

"Can you levitate me?" I asked Thalia.

"I might be able to but you do realise you won't be able to climb over the walls that way? They are enchanted. We can only exit through the door."

"I know. Just levitate me up to the lock, okay?'

She nodded.

I went to stand near the door, facing the lock. I felt a cold sensation run through me, like a fist closing around my body. Suddenly, I was up in the air, just six inches away from the lock. Then, I fell back down to the ground.

"Ow," I complained.

"Sorry, I need to practise. let me try again," she said. Tammi had almost reached us. I had a feeling that the troll wold wake up pretty soon.

"Fine. Try again."

This time, it worked. I hovered near the lock for sometime. Then, I put my hand on it and tried to focus on the gears inside it. My dad was the god of thieves, meaning I could pick locks really well, but I had to concentrate, which is a little hard to do if you are floating and can fall back down at any moment.

After what felt like eternity, the lock clicked. At exactly the same time, I fell towards the floor. I landed with a dull thud.

Tammi had reached us. We went out of the door just as the troll grunted in his sleep. I had a feeling that we had only two minutes to shut the door before it woke up.

Thankfully, Tammi took care of the problem. With her freaky magic abilities, she locked the door again.

"We're out of the prison," Tammi said, her eyes sparkling with hope."Now we just need to get out of the castle."

A castle which had numerous traps, monsters and an empousa who could freeza time. Great idea. Always wanted to do this.
