Icarus sat on the window sill and gazed out. The beauty of the beach and the sea basking under the radiant glow of the setting sun was mesmerizing. He had been imprisoned in this tower on a remote beach in Greece with his father, Daedalus by the wicked king of Minos for as long as he can remember. The teenaged prisoner wanted to live freely but alas, the Fates were not going easy on him.
The boy was swimming in his thoughts and insecurities about his own life when he noticed something interesting. Very far away, a huge wave could be seen crashing on the beach and a faint melody was heard by his attentive ears as he sat straight trying to decipher the reason of the unusually high wave.
"As much as I have observed, the weather of this area does not support such huge waves during the high spring tide but why did I spot such a huge wave today during the ebb of a neap tide?", Icarus wondered later in the night laying on his bed. He turned to face the window and the half moon greeted him. The sound of waves colliding with the beach in a rhythmic manner seemed soothing to him in his loneliness. But as he lay observing the moon trying to count the craters present on it, another melody made its way to his ears.
Icarus spang up from his bed and raced to the window. It was the same melody he had heard that morning but now the waves were calm. It seemed very confusing to the teenager. Being the grandson of Athena had its own disadvantages like his thirst for knowledge and his immense curiosity for which he was often reprimanded by his father. The boy scanned the moonlit beach for a clue but did not find anything. Disappointed, he resigned to bed once more as the melody guided him to the land of Morpheus.
This continued for two months. It was the same as the first day. But somewhere during this time, Icarus fell in love with the alluring melody. He tried to imagine the person producing it but his mind always blanked out because he never had a clue of the producer of this music. He wanted to fly out of his window like a bird and search for the person who produced this heavenly melody. And one day, he got his way.
Icarus found a design of bronze wings lying in the corner of his father's workshop one day while cleaning it. his grey eyes shone like diamonds as he had found his treasure. Three days later, at noon, Icarus was seen standing on his window sill with a pair of bronze wings strapped to his shoulders. "It is now or never", Icarus thought as he sent a quick prayer to every God, he had ever heard of in order to succeed in escaping his prison and find the mysterious musician who produced the melody that lulled him to sleep every night.
Icarus jumped. The sea breeze gave him enough lift and velocity as he soared across the sky like an eagle. For a moment, Icarus thought that he was finally free. But that was when everything spiraled down. A sudden heat wave raised Icarus further higher than he had expected and the heat of the sun increased unbearably. Turning back, Icarus saw the wax holding the bronze feathers together was starting to melt.
He panicked and tried everything to get to a lower height. But with the feathers falling off his wings, he crashed into the sea, close to the spot where he had seen the huge waves. Unfortunately, Icarus knew not how to swim and the last thing he saw before passing out, due to thrashing and inhaling quite a lot of sea water, was a pair of fish tails.
Triton had found his new hidden cove at the beach in a remote area in Greece, purely by coincidence. But the place was so divinely beautiful that he had been visiting it daily for over two months. He would play his flute, made of corals, gifted to him by Aphrodite on his 200th birthday, and spend his leisure time watching the waves. Triton was returning home at noon for his cove that day when suddenly he heard a loud splash and thrashing in the water along with muffled cries of 'Help! Help me!'. The merman rushed to the place to see a young teenage boy passing out. As his emergency rescue hormones kicked in, he willed a wave to wash both of them to the shore.
