Malcolm was the only mate-less wolf in his pack. And what was worse was that he was an omega. Normally omegas reached maturity and had their first heat when they turned 16. But for Malcolm, he still hadn't had his heat even though he was 20. Age goes differently for werewolves. Once you reach 21, you age 1 year only after 20 years have passed.
But this had a disadvantage of its own. For the omegas, if one didn't find his mate by the age of 21, they would lose their fertility. 'The world is cruel', thought Malcolm sometimes.
He had had bad luck since he was born. His first love.... Well, no one knew about it and Malcolm would rather keep it that way. But recently he fell for another omega, Nico. It was difficult not to fall for the pretty little boy but Malcolm knew he was not his mate. But as always, the heart outweighed the brain.
The affair didn't end well as Nico was already betrothed to Will, an alpha prince from their neighbouring pack, Sunshine. And to make it worse, Nico already loved Will, and the two packs had previous beef between them and in short, this incident added more to Malcolm's grief.
Though Malcolm was a prince, he was an omega and in their pack it was common for omegas, specifically for gay omegas, to be looked down upon. But when this affair came out, Malcolm's mother, the alpha of the pack, Ms. Athena, disowned him. Malcolm was nothing but a servant who was bullied by others. But he was still hopeful that his alpha would come for him, no matter what.
The bullying started getting worse once another alpha princess was born. Malcolm's rank in the pack fell steadily. At last, he was a worker in the kitchen, often used by the older warriors and higher officials as a punching bag to vent their anger. No one dared to defile his integrity as it was the gravest sin a werewolf could commit.
Malcolm resided himself to fate but still at nights, he took out his old diary and skimmed through his memories. Time passed begrudgingly as the bruises on Malcolm's pale skin increased - split lips, broken nose, broken ribs, bruised body, it was a common occurrence.
Then the unexpected happened.
The twin alpha princes of the Runner pack were coming for a visit. The twin Stoll brothers, Travis and Connor, were known as good natured alphas and the Runner pack was in a good condition under their father's rule. It was said that everyone had their own rights but there was news floating around the werewolf community. The mate of Travis Stoll, Katie Gardener had died just a few years ago. The alpha had closed himself in for some months but it hadn't caused much trouble as Travis' other twin, Connor took over his duties. Connor and Travis were joined at the hip. They were only separate from each other only when Connor was roaming around the packs for his mate. But sadly, the alpha didn't find his mate and was still mate-less. Omegas from the pack were all ready for the ball being arranged in the honour of the alphas as the mate-less alpha was coming and anyone that would be mating with Connor would be the future Luna of the Runner pack.
Malcolm was working day and night along with the other servants to make their visit a comfortable one. The night before the Stoll brothers were about to arrive, Malcolm was busy decking up the other omegas. He had become a little distracted for a moment while curling the hair of Annabeth, one of the princesses, he had made a mistake. The temperature was only a degree higher than what the princess had demanded.
But the princess noticed and though she or her hair was not hurt in any way, the princess screamed when she saw the temperature on the curler. The guards came immediately and Ms. Athena was informed. The queen was enraged. She ordered for the omega to be put in the dungeon for the night and commanded the guards to teach him a lesson. Malcolm screamed, begged and pleaded to be forgiven but this time it was a matter regarding Annabeth, who was the favourite daughter of the queen.
