The house was small two story house and it was rundown, like no one has taken care of it for twelve years. The siding was completely gone, windows were broken, it looked like it recently caught on fire, the grass was brown and mostly dirt and it reminded me of a haunted house. I glanced at everyone else and they looked scared. Austin, Anna, Tony, Andy and I pushed Randy forward and he slowly led us across the yard to the rotten door.
There was a moment of silence and Randy caustically opened the door. I felt Anna grab my hand and everyone else grabbed my shirt as we walked inside. The floorboards creaked and some broke under our weight. Randy found a clean flashlight and shone it around the house. Dust covered everything and I saw stray dogs asleep in various rooms. We didn't dare go upstairs in fear that the stairs would break.
"Adam, I'm scared" Anna whispered.
"YOU'RE scared?!" Austin said, "Anna we all are scared!"
"Shh. I think I hear Matt," Randy said as we neared a set of dusty basement stairs.
It got quiet and I heard voices talking. I couldn't make out anything they were saying but I knew one of them belonged to my brother. Anna let go of my hand and we walked single file down the creaking stairs. My breathing was shallow and my hands got sweaty. Which isn't good since I have a gun hidden in my pants incase I need to use it. I stole the gun from mom's dresser before we left.
"Please. You don't want Adam to see you like this," Matt was saying.
"Shut up!" Another voice shouted.
Then Matt cried out in pain and that's when we all burst into the basement. Matt's eyes grew wide and he started shaking his head.
"What the heck?! Adam you need to leave. Now!" Matt said. "Y-you do not want to know who killed your family. It'll make you hate everyone cl-"
"I said shut up!" The other voice yelled as he pointed a gun at my brother's head.
That's when I took action. I brought out my own gun and pointed it at the person clad all in black. Matt started crying and I eyed Matt, Randy, and the guy. My friends were huddled by the door and I pointed the gun at the three of them.
"Which one of you killed my family?" I asked.
Matthew hung his head and Randy looked at the ground.
"Did you kill my family?" I asked him. "Did you?!"
"No. I wasn't even near here at the time. I was ten years old Adam. I was on a camping trip with my family in-"
I cocked the gun and put my finger in the trigger.
"Why don't I believe you?" I asked.
"Adam don't you dare shoot my boyfriend," Matt told me.
I glared at my brother and I looked back at Randy. He was frowning and I saw the look of fear in his eyes.
"Adam don't do this," I heard Anna say.
"Why not?" I asked while pointing the gun at her. My finger was off the trigger. "Anna we've come this far. I'm not gonna back down and let the killer walk away."
"Yes you are. You're going to put the gun down, rescue your brother, and leave," she said. "No-"
I grew angry and accidentally fired the gun. Twice. One bullet went in Anna's chest and the other went into her head. In shock, I dropped the gun and stared at Anna who now laid on the ground dead.
"Anna?" I whispered with tears forming in my eyes. "Oh god I killed her. I didn't mean to! It was an accident! Anna?!"
Now I was crying and shaking Anna hoping that I didn't really kill her. But I did. I killed my future girlfriend and Andy and the others looked pissed.
"Well. Now we know who killed Anna Finch," the guy said as he placed his gun to my head.
My mind went blank and I couldn't think straight as I was forced to my feet. I saw that Matt was untied and he was frowning.
"Adam listen to his voice," Matt told me.
The guy spoke and I recognized it immediately. But it can't be. He's not capable of murder. He removed the gun from my head and I slowly turned around. He took off his mask and I felt my stomach twist into a knot. I whispered,
"Dad?"
Dad nodded his head.
"Why'd you do it?" I asked.
He didn't answer right away and I grabbed the gun. I pointed it at dad and repeated my question.
"I...I don't know. I guess since your mom kept you I wanted to help raise you. So-"
"So you went ahead and killed my family. YOU KILLED THEM!" I yelled. "You don't deserve to be my dad."
"Now. Adam don't do this out of anger," dad said, "r-remember the first time we met?"
I glared at him and threatened to fire.
"Yeah. You got attacked by Jonas and almost died," I said angrily.
He agreed and also started telling me stories about our first meeting. Stuff I already knew. I yelled at him and did a rapid fire on the pistol. But instead of the bullets going into my dad, Randy shoved him out of the way and got hit instead. They fell to the ground and Matt ran to his boyfriend. Dad rushed over and knocked the gun out of my hands just as the police came down. Dad took the blame for killing Anna and Randy. Randy. I went over to Matthew who was forcing himself not to cry.
"I'm sorry Matthew," I said, "I didn't know he would do that."
"It's alright. He was cheating on me anyway," he replied. "Let's go home."
I agreed and Matt, Austin, Andy, Tony and I followed the police upstairs and outside. Dad got arrested and I missed Anna. I told Matt we kissed and I swore I'd never fall in love again. Matt told me I'm being drastic. He said I'm just a kid and I have all of high school to fall in love and get my heart broken. In response, I punched my brother and was angry the whole way back to Owatonna.
