As soon as we reached Shiganshina district, I felt myself tense up. This was my first time outside the walls and as much as I had wanted to know what lay outside, I suddenly had the urge to head back to headquarters, far away from the world of titans.
But as soon as the gate closed behind us and we entered the clearing, I couldn't help but smile. It was the most beautiful scenery I had ever seen. I felt a pinch of excitement.
Anna, Thomas and I made our way to the spot where us medics were to be stationed, while the cavalry continued forward. We got down from our horses and started to build the tents. We built three of them, where each one of us could operate. All that was left to do was wait, hoping no one would be hurt or worse, dead.
The hope was in vain as only a little while later, soldiers were beginning to be brought to our tents. I quickly started attending to them, praying not to see Levi or Erwin in that state. It felt like hours. Suddenly, I saw a panting Stefan enter my tent. He was in Hange's squad.
"Dr. Smith! It's bad...it's really bad! C-captain H-Hange...captain Hange is hurt!", he tried to say, catching his breathe.
My eyes widened.
"What? What happened!? Where are they?", I bombarded him with questions, still not able to register what I had heard.
Stefan, his face clearly struck with panic, replied, "They headed to the forest on seeing a titan to capture it. I followed them but..."
"BUT WHAT?", I yelled, losing my calm.
"...but it was too late...when I reached them, they were lying in a pool of blood, unconscious. I-I couldn't carry them on my own so I hurried back here. Please, doctor, you have to come! They're going to die otherwise!"
No. This can't be happening. Hange can't die. No. They won't die. I can still save them. It's not too late.
"Like hell they are. Let's go.", I got out of the tent and called out to Anna and Thomas.
"But Y/N, are you sure you don't want us to come?", Anna asked concernedly.
"Yes, I'm sure! You both don't have practice with the ODM gear, it's too risky. Besides, there has to be someone here to take care of the soldiers. I'll be fine. I'm gonna bring Hange back quickly.", I assured her.
"I'll come with you doctor.", Stefan said. I nodded to him and we both mounted our horses.
"Be careful, Y/N!", Thomas called out to me.
The trees brushed past us as we hurried our horses through the forest. My heart was beating really fast and I was trying really hard not to think anything bad.
We had been riding for a while and Hange was still nowhere in sight. "Stefan, how far are we?"
Stefan, who was riding in front of me, did not answer. I urged my horse to move faster and soon I was riding next to him.
"Stefan!"
He turned his face towards me. "I'm sorry, doctor. I lied."
"What? What do you...", but before I could finish my sentence he kicked the side of my stomach hard. I immediately fell down from the horse and hit my head on the ground.
I tried to get up but my legs wouldn't bulge. My vision became distorted due to the blood that covered my eyes and everything around me started to spin. I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and soon darkness consumed me.
Levi's POV
As I took down another titan and landed back on my horse, I saw Erwin's flare which meant that the mission was over. I heaved a sigh of relief. We turned around and made our way back, carrying as many injured soldiers and dead bodies we could find.
As we made it to the clearing, I was joined by four-eyes and Erwin's squads. We rode in silence till we reached the tents. I saw Anna and Thomas strutting around looking extremely nervous. I couldn't see Y/N anywhere.
When they heard us coming, they ran towards us but stopped short. They were staring at four-eyes in shock.
"H-Hange y-you're not hurt?", Thomas asked them.
Four-eyes looked extremely confused. "Hurt? What are you talking about?"
Anna and Thomas shared a panicked look.
"What's going on?", Erwin asked.
"Commander, Stefan told us that Hange was hurt and needed medical attention. So...", Anna briefly glanced at me and continued, "So Y/N left with him to the forest and they haven't returned since."
I felt a knot in my stomach and it felt like my heart stopped beating.
"He said what?? That's ridiculous! I'm not hurt. Come to think of it, Stefan left us saying he was feeling unwell and wanted to rest. I thought it would be best to let him leave than carry dead weight. But...why...oh no...Y/N...", I heard four-eyes say but their voice barely sounded like a muffle.
My ear was ringing and I couldn't hear anything clearly.
"Levi...Levi!", Erwin called bringing me back to reality.
He looked worried; they all did. Without thinking, I pranced my horse forward and cantered off to the forest.
"Levi wait!", Erwin yelled.
"I'll bring her back. Get everyone back to headquarters. There are many who can still be saved. I'll save her. I promised you!", I shouted back and rode as fast as I could.
Y/N's POV
What is that sound? Where am I? What happened? I have to wake up...
When I slowly batted my eyes open, there was a raging ache in my head. It took me a few seconds to realize how I had wounded up in that state. I slowly lifted my head which was drenched in blood, but when I tried to get up I fell back down. Shit. I must have fractured my leg.
The thumping sound became louder. It hit me then. Titans.
I looked around but could not find my ODM gear. Stefan must have taken it. Not that I can use it in this state. There was however, one blade that was lying next to me. I didn't have time to think why it was there.
Mustering whatever strength I had in me, I sat up straight, grabbed the sword, and started to drag my body towards a tree nearby. There was nothing else I could do in this situation except hide, but the trails of blood I was leaving behind would have snitched me out any second.
I leaned my back against the trunk and tried to calm down. My hands that were tightly wrapped around the blade started to shake. Breathe. Breathe.
The stomping became louder and before I knew, there was a giant titan in front of me. The sight froze me. I only had my imagination and history books to compare, but none of those images came close to how terrifying it was in real life.
It came closer and I felt like I would faint. But as soon it stretched its hand to grab me, I lifted the sword and cut off its fingers. It stretched its other hand and I cut again. The next thing I know, its fingers were starting to grow back. I cut again and again and again but only in vain.
Nape. I have to get the nape. But I was too tired. I had already lost a lot of blood and my body was starting to give up. When I lifted my sword again, the titan crushed it in an instant.
This is it. I can no longer fight. There is no way I can escape this. As the titan grabbed me by my waist, me entire life flashed before my eyes.
Hange is going to feel guilty. I wish I could tell them it's not their fault. Erwin is going to be so alone. I am the only family he has. And Levi. Levi is going to be devastated. I promised to never leave him. I don't want him lose anyone else. I don't want him to suffer anymore. I don't want to die.
As the titan squeezed life out of me, I started to feel dizzy again. Maybe I'll die before it eats me. Good. It won't hurt...
