JJ POV
“You are all here because you were recommended and accepted to train for special, more complex missions than the average agent,” One of the head bosses at the training facility basically screams at us. “Most of you are here to learn more about skills you are lacking at, some are just here for the extra training. So all of you,” he says motioning to our group of about 15 people, “will be living here for the next six months, or until you are well enough trained. Some of you also have partners. You may or may not be used to the experience, but every group will have at least one session a day to train together, other courses will be taken individually. Any questions?” How did he just say that in one breath?
As he answers some questions, I receive my schedule. I flip through the pages, skimming around the descriptions on what I will be learning.
“You know, we’re partners now…anything and most everything we do now will one way or another involve each other. You can’t hate me forever.” I don’t look at him, but pretend to be very interested with the list of courses.
“I don’t hate you,” I say emotionlessly.
“You should make that a reality.” I raise my eyes to catch his stare.
“Is it because we messed up your mission? I mean, I could say the same thing about you and your other agent, but I’m not going to hold that against you-I can’t. We had the same mission, the same intentions.” I ponder on his words for a second and realize that he’s right.
I sigh, “We had been working on that plan for months and to have it fail in a matter of seconds? It was frustrating, especially since we had already messed up before.”
“I understand, same for us. We’ve let plenty chances slip through our fingers. But we’re gonna try it again after all of this, so I hope you don’t stay mad forever.” I examine his sincere expression and I could tell he was just as determined as I was. And still am.
“I’ll get over it. In the meantime,” I stick my hand out, “JJ Garcia, and you are?”
He smiles and accepts my handshake, “Niall Horan, pleased to meet you. Again.”
~Flashback~
I shut one of my eyes as I aim to the moving human figure. Without hesitance, I pull the trigger and a loud gunshot echoes through the room, followed by several others. I reload my gun and shoot again. Reload and shoot. Reload and shoot. I keep shooting at the moving targets and dummies until they are all on the ground. “Wow, JJ, you never gave them a chance,” Niall says as he comes to my station. I laugh and remove my safety glasses.
“They’ll never know what hit ‘em,” I say as I put down the gun. “What do you have next?” He takes out a crumbled piece of paper from his pocket.
“Um, Foreign Language,” he reads off his paper.
“What language?” I ask as I gather my things.
“I don’t even know. I think Spanish…?” I stare at him in disbelief and he smiles sheepishly.
“Niall, I am slightly offended. I want you to drop that class. I’ve been living with you for, what? Three months? You know where I lived for nearly half my life…right? Well forget that, I’ll teach you. Learn something else, like Arabic or Russian. Maybe even Japanese,” I say the last part with an obvious tone.
“Well okay then. Fine, but I don’t want you to loose your temper because I don’t know what Irlanda is. My teacher got irritated.”
“Niall.”
“Yes?”
“Ireland.”
“What?”
“It’s Ireland.” He stays silent for a moment and I can’t help but roll my eyes.
“Anyways, what’s next for you?” he suddenly asks, changing the subjects.
“Workouts.” I say as I walk past him. “I’ll see you later.”
“Adios!” he yells as I turn a corner down the hall. That boy sure is something.
~ End of Flashback~
We got to the airport after a little hassle, but other than that, everything worked out. Niall was even able to talk to the workers and attendants. Thanks to me, he now knows some Japanese and Spanish. We finally board the plan after waiting and standing in endless lines. We sit down and await the takeoff warning. “Are you happy to see Styles again?” I ask, trying to make conversation.
“Of course, he’s one of my best mates. What about you and Annabelle?”
“Don’t call her that. She’ll get irritated. She prefers AJ. But yeah, I’m psyched to see her.” It felt wrong talking about our friends like that. We were supposed to be very…well, careful about how we expression feeling towards other people. When I first started out, they told us to watch what we said in public because we never know who’s listening. And that makes sense when I think about it. I tend to eaves drop A LOT. We make more conversation until the intercom comes on. Soon enough, we’re on our way to London.
